mixing retail and steam.

Is it possible to play dayz if you have a retail box copy of arma 2 and then use the steam version of operation arrowhead? I just want to make sure before i purchase.

Yep this was initially how I was set up but it started failing in me eventually and I couldn't get the game to load.

Since then I have bought Op arrowhead from Bis studios so that everything is in the same directory.

That's not to say you will have problems asmim sure there are others who have the retail/steam mix.
