Do zombies crawl?

Very new to DayZ - one day new, in fact.

I was on a server this morning, crawling (prone) through a small town looking for water. (Where the hell is it?!) I heard rustling in the distance, and a head swishing back and forth.

This guy wasn't standing, and he wasn't doing the creepy crouch/shuffle, but was literally army crawling through the grass. Can zombies do this? Or was this another player? I kept my distance to be safe, but I didn't know how to tell if he was human or not. (He wasn't wearing a backpack.)

yes they can

if he wasn't wearing backpack its probably was zombie

Yes they can. They seem particularly keen on doing it if you shoot them in the legs.

I've also been chased by one through that little gap on the bottom of fences like that one around the fire station east of Elektro

Yes, They even go prone and do an army crawl as well which is scary as these can be mistaken for other survivors in the dark :L
