[Tutorial] 2 metre poster of DayZ map

Hi guys. I might be one of the few people here sad enough to do this, but I wanted to print out a large-scale map of Chernarus for easy reference / because it's cool. Just in case anybody else wants to do something similar, here's what I did.

1) Get the big massive gigantic-scale Chernarus map called "MaxHighresChernarusLootV1.png" (available online, google it) and convert it to a smaller file sized JPG using photoshop. Don't change the resolution, otherwise you'll lose some of that detail. If you want an already converted copy (down from 81mb to 14mb) which works with PosteRazor, get it here : https://www.dropbox....narusLootV1.jpg

2) Download and install the free software called PosteRazor (http://posterazor.sourceforge.net/)

3) Load the image into PosteRazor and select your options. There are options for how much overlap each page has (ie, how much of the next tile gets printed... its good to have between 0.5cm and 1.5cm so you can easily line them up. When you get to the screen with paper options, make sure you specify whether you want ABSOLUTE map size (how big in CMs etc) or how many pages wide / tall you want. Remember, multiply the width by the height to see how many pages of ink you're using :)

4) Click the little disk icon to save the pages to a PDF. Use SumatrPDF or something similar to print out the pages. Ensure your printer setup is set to max quality / photo quality and that you have the right paper orientation (ie, portrait landscape). Turn off all scaling or fancy PDF printout options so your pages come out as intended.

5) Go buy more ink from the shop, probably get more paper while you're there :D

6) Print that map!

7) When it's printed, you'll want to cut out VERY carefully the borders and overlap the "tiles" of paper before using whatever method to stick them together.

Here's a photo of my 42-page, 6page x 7page, almost 2 square metre poster ready to be cut up. Luckily, it's sitting on a massive framed map of the area of scotland I live in, so that's going to just get stuck straight on the top. (Until a real zombie apocalypse when I need real-world reference :P )

[Edit: Obviously, there is a small white margin around each page. This is to make sure your printer doesn't do any printing off the edge, this white margin is to be cut off]

Thanks for the link. Rasterbator seems to rasterize images, which would let you conceivably enlarge to any size, which is cool, although the link to the map image given is pretty big to start with anyway :)

Oh man, I just spent like 130 bucks to print one of those - 140cm x 80cm, Photographic paper - at a printers.

Totally worth it.

Hi,

I have a large .gif, intended to be part of a large display I am compiling. It is about 1.5m long but only the height of an A4 sheet in landscape (if that makes sense). I would like to print it out on A4 pages and then join them together. I thought photoshop woul have a function for this but it seems it is unable to do it. Cope if these objectives, the program RonyaSoft Poster Printer?
