1: I think it would have saved.

2: You should use a map. There is one you need to find in game to use or use: http://dayzdb.com/map - you will have to find where you are in game and locate it on the map

First y it will always save in any case, but you lose all if you die

second you need to look at the map after time you get to know where which towns are. And if you login in the right lower corner your actual position will be written.(town or something near you)

1. The server you are playing at needs about 1 min to save your inventory. When you disconnect everything will be lost what you have looted 1 min ago.

2. Use a compass, map, GPS and look for buldings to adjust your position. A spoilering loot map like DayzDB.com can help you. But care its totally spoilering.

Also DO NOT make bookmarks on the map. Its a very bad idea. I see things like "base camp" "heli wreck" and even saw someone's bookmark at the NEAS for the friggin chopper the day they came back. I couldnt believe the last one. And yes everyone and his brother was there killing each other over that pos.

If you don't want to use spoiler maps then you'll find an in-game map in supermarkets and some other places. To get a sense of direction the clouds always come from the west and of course if you know what time it is (with a watch) you can use the shadows to get a heading.

Maps are fairly common in Cherno or Electro. I've only ever found one GPS in my whole time playing DayZ so good luck with that.

It sounds like your at the power plant just to the North of Electro. If you go south you'll see the city, it's a good place to get your starting gear (compass, map and so on) but it's risky too. If you head north without a map then it's just a case of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.

Yup, good call. My starting strategy is to go to Electro first when I have nothing to lose, It's a great way of getting your basic stuff quickly, as long as you don't get shot in the face. Heres my top tips to get you up and running:

a ) Get an axe as ASAP. This'll help you take out Zeds without telling the whole world where you are.

b ) Use the axe to break the hospital windows if you have to then stock up on Meds. Mainly Morphine, this'll save your life often when you brake your legs.

c ) Head for the 2 firestations (you'll see their towers). It's very risky but you can get good military grade weapons early on from these.

d ) Visit at least one supermarket. If your lucky you'll get most of your basics here including the holy trinity (matches, knife, axe) then you can hunt for food and say goodbye to the beans.

e ) If you hear flies buzzing around you might find a dead player. Loot the corpse. If your lucky, they'll have done all the hard work for you.

f ) Don't get greedy. When you have the basics, head for the hills. You can easily find a shotgun and a sidearm in the small villages and surrounding barns.

Good luck.
