jonnerz 33 Posted April 30, 2012 I've been trying to get hold of a good deal for an Australian dedicated server. The main problem I have had is the sheer cost of bandwidth. The best option is to go with a provider who offer cheaper 'gaming' bandwidth as the server won't be used for anything that requires the more premium bandwidth. This bandwidth still costs a hell of a lot. I'll list below the specs/quotes I have got so far and my thoughts on them. I'd also like to say that I don't necessarily have to be the one in charge of purchasing this server. I don't mind acting as the middle-man and collecting all the donations but if anyone more suited to the ArmA 2 AUS community wants to then that's fine.Quad Core E3 12404 GB DDR3 RAM500 GB HDD2TB data$325 / month. This could hold one server, around 50 slots.Quad Core E3 12408 GB DDR3 RAM500 GB HDD3TB data$400 / monthThis could hold two servers, around 40 slots each (to be safe)The current NY box is at 2TB after about 8 days of hosting 2-4 servers solid (NY3 and NY4 have not always been up). This means 3TB should be a comfortable amount for 2 smaller servers.UPDATE:AusArmA.org have kindly taken over the responsibility and donations for the server. Here is their donation link:AusArmA Donation Page:http://www.ausarma.org/donate
korten 2 Posted April 30, 2012 Well the second option would be more cost-effective.Are you looking for a certain number of donations?
SnR 16 Posted April 30, 2012 Thanks for your investigating, to assist in your calculations.40 slots, 168GB a dayWe have been throwing around different scenarios, where if the NZ server stays up maybe a couple of us with BE ping kick on can operate again from 20+ slots mindful of bandwidth use though. If the above happens even better.
profanwolf 3 Posted April 30, 2012 Yesterday as much as 315 GB was used by my three 40 slot EU servers.Which at that point would translate into 9.4 TB per month and 3150 GB per server, which I hope isn't the case as it's not only those servers, but it's mostly them. This was an extreme case though and I doubt it'll be this much again today. jonnerz 33 Posted April 30, 2012 Is that inbound + outbound or just outbound? The bandwidth for those AUS server quotes is only outbound. I don't think inbound is metered.

Freeborne (DayZ) 7 Posted April 30, 2012 Jonnerz, I've sent you an email with an offer from AusArmA. We will take on responsibility of server costs and donations if you are willing to help set us up with a good server host.In addition to the 30 slot NZ server, AEF may also provide a smaller server to cope with any additional demand. This should mean ANZ will have 60-100 slots available.
cordleztoaster 5 Posted May 1, 2012 Well herbert posted on the internode forums asking if they could host a server and the response was.Hi,At this time the DayZ modification will not be installed to our ARMA 2 servers. If the DayZ development team, supports or owners would like to contact Internode to discuss further business hosting I'm happy to provide our staff support to ensure the requirements are met.I don't wish to speak for the fate of the current ARMA 2 servers but it would be more likely to see a reduction or reallocation of resources (see: hardware) to alternative games (ARMA III?) in the future, instead of expansion.Thank you :)http://games.on.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=194301So if the mod team get in contact with internode maybe we can work out some sort of deal. TheRiddick 0 Posted May 1, 2012 I think not much is going to happen until ARMA3, allot of ISPs will love to have such a server up with a flagship title. ARMA2 is long in the tooth now... Maybe BIS will release a MP demo alpha soon? :)For the moment 325 month is pretty decent price. But we need to restrict foreigners or it will turn to custard. WHY? because US/EU would be playing on it 24/7 while NZ/AUS players tend to only play a little bit at night, thus its more manageable Vs the hungry foreigners. -PR-Z-MaSSive 1 Posted May 1, 2012 IM sorry $400 per month for that setup? You people should go with US servers for AUS/NZ. For that money you can get 2 powerful dedicate machines in US and run with 100 slots on each. This is just EU example of host with quality offer, I'm sure you should be able to find something like this in US too.http://www.hetzner.de/en/hosting/produkte_rootserver/ex6Intel® Xeon® E3-1245 Quadcoreincl. In case you didn't know I'm currently hosting NY 1-4 and the new Arizona server (Coming Soon). I'm a GSP so I'm constantly on the look out for US and EU providers - I have a vast knowledge of many many hosts and the price ranges for various setups. There are people that don't enjoy playing with a 200+ ping and the whole point of this thread is to get an Australian server up for the Oceania guys. They are aware that it's a hell of a lot cheaper to use a US provider but I understand why they would want a more local server.
m3anmarin3 0 Posted May 1, 2012 Be keen to donate if we somehow restrict it to Oceania only, if only to help keep out some of the trolls and idlers from the US servers, also, it just costs so much more for us to have a local one.
Freeborne (DayZ) 7 Posted May 2, 2012 AusArmA is enquiring with the host provider that Jonnerz referred us to. If we can match, or tailor that plan a little, we will be moving forward with provisioning a server ASAP. The first month will be paid for, with subsequent months dependant on player donations.Donations will be taken at www.ausarma.org/donate Paypal is required and donations can be anonymous if you wish. Otherwise all donations are visible on that page.Bandwidth is still a major concern though for all ANZ providers. Official NZ server is up/down frequently, but I hope it will serve as a local server for NZ dev team to test on, allowing AEF and AusArmA servers to have low ping limits to reduce overseas players and allow us to minimise our bandwidth usage. relentless@clear.net.nz 12 Posted May 2, 2012 Hey Freeborne remove the . from your link :)I think this is the best option so far given that AEF previously had a live server.Lets see if our oceanic brethren can put their money where their mouth is.I'll jump on this wagon. jtime 0 Posted May 2, 2012 Been following this thread. I notice now we have both Jonnerz and Freeborne with donation threads. What is going on guys? Having two donation threads up for aussie servers is begging for split funds. So who is it going to be before people start throwing theirs in?

Having two donation threads up for aussie servers is begging for split funds. So who is it going to be before people start throwing theirs in?I've updated the main thread, ausarma.org are now in charge of getting the server up and collecting donations. I didn't receive any donations but I donated $25 to ausarma.org anyway.
cm. (DayZ) 28 Posted May 2, 2012 we are finalising pricing with our host and once that is done we will be up and running. If everything goes south we can still refund all the donations without issue (paypal allows 60 day refunds without penalty). So far it's looking fairly good, pretty expensive though. It's looking to be around the $400/month mark which is unsustainable over the long run unless we get some serious donations. May give us a few months of good use however. This is generally why ausarma has never run a game server, it would send us broke trying host a decent one. Freeborne (DayZ) 7 Posted May 5, 2012 Sure. Server is up, with A2CO installed and email went to DayZ about an hour and a half ago. Awaiting Rocket to set up the DayZ stuff. It should be up sometime today as he should still be asleep for a few hours.

jtime 0 Posted May 5, 2012 Well there be ping restrictions to keep der amerikanen out?It would be a good idea since most of the day chasers don't understand that almost every Australian server provider has finite data plans and its not reasonable to have the server running under full player load 24/
cm. (DayZ) 28 Posted May 5, 2012 99% sure there will be a ping limit. Probably set it to about 250 or so as a rough guess, maybe less.
