Unexpected Emotion from a GAME

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm posting here because I had an experience today that shocked me. I felt an emotion I didn't think a game could ever evoke. So far my experience in this game has been extremely fun, i've killed players only when they were a possible threat and I felt alright with it. But today I was searching for Helicopter Crash sites around NW Airfield and as I was coming up over a hill in a tree line, I noticed movement about 800 meters away. I zoomed in with my M107 that I had looted from a bandit me and my friends had killed the previous day.

Now by no means do I consider myself a bandit, I don't have the urge to be friends with other players, but I don't shoot people at random either. If the circumstances are right, and a connection of being friendly is made, I'll help out and be more than obliged to offer supplies or anything I can give. But today I tested myself. I zoomed in, and sure enough, it was a survivor. I've never had an opportunity like this, I shot him down and killed him.

When I got to his body I noticed he was new, only a m16 and a few medical supplies, and a Assault Pack. I didn't need anything, I had killed him purely because he was there. A little bit after the initial adrenaline, I had an intense feeling of regret, I mean, to the point that I felt sick to my stomach, I've had my share of bandits killing me and I know how shitty of a feeling it is to get killed with no fighting chance. The thought of me killing this guy when I could of just kept going my separate way. It was very intense, I eventually talked myself into realizing it's just a game. But It is surreal that I even thought like that about a game.

The way this game is set up is WAY ahead of it's time, I've never in my 19 years on earth had a emotion that intense from a strictly virtual experience. Rocket, You hold a legendary idea that could shape the gaming world forever. Please, I know when it comes down to it, it's a game. But please, don't stray from that vision you have, you have a huge responsibility to continue to shape this into a masterpiece. Thank you for giving me the privileged to be a part of this.

I had a similar experience to that too. Saw a guy coming out of an apartment at cherno with some minor weapons he just found inside. No way he would see me and be able to engage from where I was, but I took the shot anyways. Felt bad about it since I didn't even try to talk to him but cherno is merciless by nature and I was under it's cruel and twisted spell!

But I hear you on the "it's a game, you didn't ACTUALLY kill anyone" speech that one gives to oneself after an unnecessary murder. Unless you're a sociopath bandit, in which case I imagine you dance around the corpse and sing merry songs.

Psssht. If he's up north at least past stary, he's a threat! You don't need to take any risks when you have the advantage, and if he really is a new player then maybe next time he'll be more cautious. And if you shot him from the 800m mark, that's impressive, hard shot to do, kudos.

I also have feelings of regret every time I kill someone, unless they fire at me first. Problem is, bad experiences have made me shoot first and ask questions later if I see a weapon in hand.

You silly humans and your emotions...

Argh I've heard that from somewhere, can't remember where though.

A few days ago, I had 2 murders to my name via self-defence.

I was playing at night, and was on the western border of Elektro, rooting around in the trees looking for a route to the airstrip (at the time I thought I was in Cherno), when I spotted the light from a torch in the distance.

Being the pansy I am, I immediately got shitscared and thought that I was about to die. I dropped down and took aim with my new Lee Enfield.

I watched the guy make his way to the petrol station and proceed to look around the buildings. His torch passed over my direction once or twice, but he hadn't seen me. I was really afraid he'd have a decent gun and spot me, so I took the shot.

I missed, and he dropped to the floor. I shot 2 more times. His torch went out, but no murder. I waited.

I could just make out his outline moving, so I shot again, missing. Finally his torch came back on, so I aimed in again.

I shot again and I'm fairly sure it made contact, but he was still alive, so I shot again. He was dead.

Moving down to where his body was, I realised what I'd just done. Killed someone on sight without even saying "friendly."

Then I searched him, and found that all he had was a bandage and some painkillers.

I killed a fresh spawn on sight.

I felt absolutely awful. I've never felt so bad for killing someone on a game before - and I doubt I ever will again.

Now, when I see an unarmed person, I'll either avoid them, kill any zeds chasing them, or I'll ask them if they need supplies.
