Vehicles and durability.

Recommended Posts

The other day myself and a buddy got into a firefight with two other players. We had a bus, fully repaired 100% ready to go. We started driving off when two guys each in a tractor drove down the road. Of course a firefight ensued. We were out in an open field trying to get back to the road from where we hid the bus while we repaired it. Ultimately they were able to destroy the buss with small arms fire.

This should not be possible!

I, in turn focused fire on both their tractors and with 2 clips of ammo from an M4A1 was able to destroy both of them as well. It's just not right. Small arms fire should be able to damage an engine, body, windows and tires. Perhaps cause a leak in the gas tank and make it drain but blow it up? No. Satchel charges, grenades, explosives in general should be the only things capable of destroying vehicles.

This is really an issue inherent in ArmA 2 but if it can be tweaked in DayZ then it should be.

My 2 cents.

Thank you.

For those of you wondering...we lost. They had excellent cover behind some walls down on the road. We had nothing but the bus. I managed a few shots that got them up and running for better cover but ultimately they got the final shots off and won. Regardless...they should have won a bus off that with heavy damage to repair.

by m1 i assume you mean m1911?? dont call it an m1 if thats what you mean....the other m1xx guns would be m107, m14 or m1014 which could all dmg a vehicle pretty bad and i wouldnt call them small arms..........................also i think bullets could blow up a vehicle if hitting the right spot either way the only thing about vehicles is they shouldnt blow up with a red hull i dont understand that

Sorry...I meant M4A1. Corrected it.

Either way it would be one in a million if bullet fire from anything less than a rocket or explosive device caused a vehicle to blow up. It's not the movies.

I suppose gun fire from something like a Cobra or something could make a vehicle catch fire...perhaps a 50 cal but that would even be unlikely and would have to be several shots right to the gas tank.

maybe ad some anti-vehicle ammunition, which would be able to blow up stuff...:/

could be used for tanks too, if addet.

i dont know much about cars but i would like to think spamming 1 or 2 clips from a m4a1 in the engine would disable a vehicle or maybe hit something causing a fire. but thats just how video games work. in gta you can spam a tire and the car will blow up and dont give me that realism crap cuz when it comes down to it...its a video game.

also i would love to see some heavy ammo in the game like the AA-12 has HE rounds that destroy everything...so sexy

Even an anti-materiel rifle will not "blow up" a regular vehicle. If a vehicle is supposed to be destroyed in a spectacular way without adding anything like explosives or a fire accelerant you will have to shoot a hole into the gas tank, wait for enough gas to leak out and for the gasoline exiting to produce enough fumes and then you may start trying to get a spark to appear by shooting the vehicle or nearby objects.

(edit: In other words it's not gonna happen in a firefight that is resolved within a time frame of a few seconds. just in case someone didn't understand what I was trying to explain.)

Other than that you will not really blow up or burn a vehicle by shooting bullets at it.

Disabling a vehicle is a different story. Well placed shots into the tires (obviously) but also the motor block (with a high enough calibre) will disable a vehicle rather quickly.

So I entirely agree with the OP, that after some AR salvos, there should still be a vehicle that can be fixed (replace engine, tank, scrap metal or wheels) and more importantly that still has a trunk with stuff to loot if the former owner chose to put something inside it.

Of course this is a game and we all know it will never be truly realistic. But the entire approach to DayZ (and also ARMA II) is one of simulating something close to reality so I really don't see why we'd need some XxX or James Bond physics here. For me the thought of blowing up in a car, because a M107 or AS50 (let alone some AR or handgun) hit my car is just silly. The thought of my vehicle coming to an abrupt halt in the middle of the road and having to exit the vehicle and defend myself against an ambush however is very realistic and desirable to me.

So I too would very much like to see this changed even though I know that this will probably come very low on the to do list as it'd require quite an effort to work around what ARMA II layed out as ground rules for vehicle destruction.
