Changing back packs in DayZ

Is there a proper procedure to change the pack pack to say an Alice Pack. Seems I loose my stuff every time. I'll have a back pack full of items and I can't simply swap bags. The bag I drop disappears. Nor can I drop my items on the ground. They disappear too. So how is this done? Properly...

Mousewheel over new bag: open bag, then open your current backpack and move your items into the new one.

Then pick up the new one, job done.

Just open the bag on the ground and transfer all items, then loot it

if its on a body just swap it in the gear menu, if its on the floor open it up, put your shit inside with the 'open pack' action, then use the 'take pack' action. congrats you just swapped your bag without dropping your shit

• "Open" the bag on the ground.
  
• Now "Open" your bag on the gear menu.
  
• Carefully transfer the contents of your bag into the bag on the ground using the gear transfer arrows.
  
• Now close the gear menu.
  
• Finally "Take" the bag on the ground.
  

This will replace the bag you're wearing with the one on the ground which will have all your gear in it already.

I think you need to loot all the items in the same spawn as the backpack. Then it will allow you to 'Take' the backpack which will automatically switch your current backpack with the one on the ground.
