How do you fire guns?

I had an M1014 or something with 16 rounds (two lots of 8 rounds) and I had to defend myself from a single zombie (health 11372). Every time I fired with the left mouse button, I fired a flare. I tried switching actions with the scroll wheel, but there were no actions. Then I got knocked out after about three punches and bled to death.

So, my question is, this being my first gun that I would have had a chance to shoot (I had one a little earlier, but I got to the top of the fire station on a ladder and for some reason the game decided it was time to make a running leap off the tower which killed me which was also a bit inconvenient after spending 5 hours trying to meet up), how do you shoot in this game? I assume I don't need to reload it more than once.

You have to press F to cycle through items and your rate of fire

Press 'F'. You wil see it cycle through weapons and firemodes up top in the right hand corner. Also ';' will switch between primary and secondary.

Like above 'f' key by default, play arma 2 -_-...

When you have other stuff like tin cans, flares, chem lights and grenades in your inventory, and then press "F" you rotate though your "throwable" things. If you have done this, you will instad of shooting your gun have throw a flare.
