It would be cool if we could run an app on our phone or tablet that shows a map that gets regularly updated with our current location.

Of course, the map should only display if we actually have a map in-game and should only show our live position if we have GPS in-game. The game client itself should output a data feed that the phone app can connect to provided it's on the same network (similar to TeamSpeak Remote).
