What I learned from Dayz

Recommended Posts

If there is ever a zombie apocalypse, the biggest threat to humanity will be hackers.

How can you even balance or work on a game that is basically broken?

On one server I was dead before I even spawned, luckily I went to another server and got all my gear back, although I was teleported to the shore.... nice.

Then on another server everyone is suddenly teleported to the wilderness, I'm surrounded by other players with guns. I log out and when I log back in I'm at the airfield.... in the middle of it.

In both cases I didn't lose my stuff but I could see how easily I can be wiped out by server bug/glitches and ofcourse the crafty hackers.

Honestly if you ever charge for this game it will be the death of DayZ, it has more bugs and issues then any MMO I have ever played. I never know if I will spawn in the same place with the same gear and the whole server mess is terrible. Dayz needs a dedicated server because lets face it people are cheaters, they will do anything to get the goods because they don't like a challenge and are not playing dayz for immersion or survival but just to ruin the game for others. Sad but true.

um.. it's a alpha. You do realize that right? I mean it's a mod... <.< that was made by 1 guy.. with no real backing. I mean if you don't like it be my guest and make your own MMOZSG

Honestly ? I think you're on the lucky end. I have once been teleported into the town square of cherno with ALL other players, all of us got turned into goats, the hacker then proceeded to come down and take us all out with a clean revolver shot to the head... I now know how animals in a slaughterhouse feel... The cheating in DayZ is quite immense, that is sadly due to the fame and attention the mod gathered upon its release. Before that hacking was pretty much "not there", ArmA 2 is a mil-sim and only hardcore mil-sim fans will play/enjoy it so the playerbase is small and hackers don't have a big audience. But now with DayZ and 24/7 full servers in a sandbox environment I can see how fun it can be for hackers to turn people into goats, make them dance or do pushups. Battle-Eye is doing a decent job though I think, it catches a lot of hackers, sadly only the script kiddies and other "small fish". Too bad detection and actual banning takes so long.

For your pure amusement (and that of others) I can highly reccomend these 2 videos, they're short and pretty much show you the possibilities for hackers in the DayZ mod for ArmA 2.

Its still in very early alpha. This kind of lame shit happens a lot. If you really dont like the game, just wait a few months. By then most stuff *should* be fixed

The Problem here is the Game the Mod is running on. Dean "rocket" Hall has pretty much nothing on his hands to fight the hackers, he can just hope that players keep on reporting and that Battle-Eye does its job. This has NOTHING to do with it being an Alpha, it's a MOD that runs on a game with SHITTY and DATED Anti-Cheat software that has yet to prove itself. The Cheat-Protection is not in the Mod, it's in the game.

I normally try not to use "it's an alpha" argument, but I can't resist. How many MMO's have you played on Alpha stage? Even on beta they are buggy as hell! And Dayz is nowhere near an MMO, it is a mod on top of military shooter, which tries to archive something, that was never intended in the core game itself. Yes, hackers are a problem, a big one actually, but they are looking into it, trying to fix it (and the problem is not DayZ related, it is Arma/BE problems, that have never got fixed in last 3 years)

And BTW this game does have dedicated servers, the problem is this game is client-heavy.

The cheat protection is a big fail, I get kicked due to high ping more then any hacker in game, and they are multiplying, two servers in one night seems pretty high yield, forget dayz until this can be fixed, unfortunately this will hurt only ONE guy. I just wish people would stop messing with Rockets game because in the end it doesn't really hurt any of us except rocket. If people give up because of hackers then rocket is losing a user base because of hacking alone and not because of any game mechanics.

It's really too bad, because the game has so many good things I almost feel like other game studios are jealous and trying to kill the game on purpose.

Agreed. The hacking is completely out of the hands of Rocket. It's an outdated system from Arma that is the issue. Bohemia are hopefully working on it with their new found fortune.

I like the game but this is NOT an alpha problem, I think you're mixing apples and oranges. The biggest problem in this game is how easy it is to hack the game, it has nothing to do with rocket or the game mechanics of an alpha mod.

My encounters with cheaters over the course of 1 week:

My hubbie and I spent some days getting used to the game and learning the mechanics. When we finally got ourselves a bit geared up (with low-end gear) and started heading towards the wilderness, we suddenly heard explosions and saw bright white lights all over the place. We both died. I respawned to retrieve my gear (such a newbie mistake), but all of the sudden -- in the middle of nowhere, while simply sneaking -- my leg breaks. Followed by a shot to the head.

We respawn and gear up again. This takes hours, if not a whole day. We get to a small city, and ERHMERHGERHD we found a freakin' motorcycle!! We drive to another city, my hubbie gets out to check it out, I stay on the passenger seat. Then I get teleported. I see a man in a guille suit, surrounded by vehicles, aiming at me:

(Player tags would be nice...)

He seemed to be as surprised as I was, as he didn't shoot me right away. But then he did, I tried to drive off, he shot me some more and I died.

Since I was teleported I had NO idea where I was. So I respawn and gear up again!

My hubbie logged out, and when he logged back in he was in the debug world. Respawn again!

This time everything went smooooooooooooth. We survived for 2-3 IRL days. We raided every city we went to; I got over 130 infected kills without dying. We had auto injectors, so even if the infected broke our legs (which they seem to do quite often these days) we could still keep on truckin'. We had alice packs, so much meat, so many bandages, so many beans, pepsis and waterbottles. A compass, maps, a freakin entrenching tool, so much ammo and weapons we couldn't carry it all, a tent stuffed with goodies, etc etc. We even found two bikes! We were RIGGED. Ready to head to airfield and get sniped by honest players (after we defeated hordes of super-fast spawning infected who broke our legs 3 times)

Zz9eE.jpg

We come across a deer stand, my hubbie climbs up (finds phat loot) but manages to break his leg somehow. He was also sick, and we didn't have any auto injectors left (because, lol, our legs were broken 3 times by infected!). We were discussing what to do, no infected anywhere, in the middle of a forest, I was crouched, not even moving.

Then CRACK. My leg broke. Then BOOM. A shot to the head. Yes, the boom came after the crack. No one shot my leg. No one. He broke it by the press of a button.

Err, Mrs_Murder. That's a cool story and pics but its not hacking or cheating. I did some testing of weapons with a friend and If I shot him from 100m away with my M4A1 CCO SD he could here no gunshot. A couple of times he would get knocked unconcious or have his legs broken by the first shot. I think that's what happened to you.

*edit - Actually, that first bit probably is hacking, don't hate me ;)

Soo... my group and me just spend the last days setting up a camp, we had tanktraps around it, 8 tents FULL of anything you could desire (NVG, Rangefinder, AS50, M4 CCO SD, etc.). It was far off too, nobody would ever go there, suddenly, a gunshot, first one of us goes down, no sign of life ANYWHERE. Seconds later 4 more of us got killed and the camp got destroyed. A friend of ours logged in 10 minutes later, our bodies and the camps were gone, no sign that a camp or human being has ever been there. Moments later half the population of the server dies and as I respawned on the coast I can see a glimpse of a guy in a Ghillie with a golden revolver as he tp's infront of me, kills me and disappears again... lovely, brilliant.

I'm sure it's such a thrill for a hacker to dominate when they actually are doing nothing to help an alpha mod, they are like cancer and should be removed, since they have no lives and have to take others.

Dear hacker, no matter how many times you shoot me you are still a loser, big time. One thing you don't understand and probably never will, even if you gave me the tools to cheat and hack, I would not use them, I am better then you, and as I see it you are all cripples who depend on hacked software like a crutch to keep you entertained. I do it without hacking and I have a lot more fun! You have no game hackers. Bunch of losers.
