DayZ "progress" is saved in a database according to your CD key. You can reinstall it and be right where you left off in DayZ when you get back. I did it last night.

i just did it myself, so no your dayZ character will be fully geared when you reinstall. I dont know what happens to your OA and arma 2 ingame saves though.
