Run Speed Variance?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else noticed how drastic character speeds will vary from time-to-time? Initially, I thought it was related to the stats/condition of the character, but increasingly, it doesn't seem to be the case. (Well-fed, Unthirsty, 42C character running slower than a starving, dying one)

After that, I thought it might have been the weight of gear slowing down character, but that isn't it either.

After some brief testing, I think I might have discovered the cause- a mixture of performance and network connectivity.

Friend A is experiencing major lag in forests, due to rendering foliage. He runs slower.

Friend B experiences medium lag, but still runs fine and moves faster than Friend A.

Friend A looks straight up into the sky, resulting in a 20+ FPS boost, and, ironically, also starts outrunning Friend B.

...

Thoughts? Is this just coincidence, or is the game really that strange?

As far as I know, character health status doenst affect running speed. And there is no weight system in Arma. So your theory seems plausible.

Food and drink status do affect character speed. What kind of weapon you have drawn also affects it. As for performance, I've heard it has an impact, but I haven't noticed personally.

I noticed that if you rest for a while, so that your character does not wheeze/ out of breath, then he will run faster for 30 seconds or until he starts to be out of breath again.

Different weapons you wear cause you to run at different speeds.

For example, if you run with a pistol in your hand, you'll run faster than you do with a primary.

If you are crouch running with a primary, you'll crouch run faster than you would with a pistol.

If you at crawling with a pistol, you'll crawl faster than you did with a primary.

Your connection to the server also affects your running speed.

Your blood amount also affects your running speed.

If you sprint (Double tapping W) you will run fast then wheeze and run slower then you were if you were simply "Jogging" as it is called.

I am sure you have noticed any time spent moving with cause your aim to shake, sprinting and long distances jogging shake your aim the most.

Oh, I forgot to add. Some weapons you have will cause you to run at different speeds... Like for some reason I run faster with a DMR than I do with a M4A1 Holo.

Me and my friends have come to the conclusion that speed is tied directly to FPS.

Higher FPS, higher speed.

Is it just me, or is that a bit silly? =P

So basically if someone has a much better computer, and good internet, they'll run significantly faster? =\ Shouldn't that be changed? Does BIS already know about this?

Pretty sure they do. And its not uncommon for games to have these types of, Hm,I am not sure if you would even call it problems. If your PC has a sluggest performance, you should try lowering your settings. However, its very rare that ever in DayZ you are running from a player, possibly dodging through buildings. Zombies are a joke.

No, it has been tested that weapons/gear/backpacks/character status do not affect the running speed of your character

But the fps thing may be plausible, I never seen frames lower than 40 in dayz so I have no say but I have noticed running than friends who are wearing same gear and have just eaten and drank (ingame) before we go out on a hunt for nubs

yeah I'm not sure if weapon or health affects running speed.

You have 2 levels which depend on "out of breath factor"

Jogging and Sprinting

Jogging is simply moving faster than walking, be that standing up or crouching.

Sprinting is tapping W twice and holding. This will put character in standing posture if he is crouched, and get him running faster than if he was jogging.

HOWEVER !

If you character has been jogging for some time, and you hear panting sounds, as if he is out of breath, double tapping W will put him in a Sprinting stance, but the speed will

be about the same as jogging.

Basically you can jog all day long, even when out of breath, and the speed will remain constant. However Sprinting is available only when your character has caught his breath, and is used mostly to sprint from cover to cover.

Can you show me a thread where this has been proven? If so that would be great. I have looked high and low for documentation on how run speeds work in DayZ and all I have is personal testing and posts I have read about it, but never about any official testings or statements.

All I can add is that I recently got my brother to start playing, so we are both connecting from the same router/modem, and we both run at different speeds, so I don't think connectivity is the deciding factor. We do have drastically different machines, yet I run faster on my older machine than he does on his newer one.

Higher FPS, higher speed.

Movement speed by foot/vehicle is indeed tied into your FPS.

You having the same connection doesn't mean you have the same connection speed. It isn't divided evenly.

Interesting. So how is it divided?

I wouldn't say its divided. Its, hard to explain. Let me put it this way.

TCP/IP is crap.

For a while I thought run speed was tied to your weapon. I had always noticed that running with a primary was faster than with a pistol, and crawling with a pistol was faster than with a primary.

I no longer think this is true. I run with a group of two other people and someone is always lagging behind, even when we all have the same weapons out. And it changes from server to server. On one I will be the fastest in the group, on another I will be the slow one (no other changes beside the server). So your connection/fps determining run speed makes sense.

I only brought this up due to my observations- I have a (what might be considered) nice computer, and so I always have to stop and wait for the friends behind me that have poorer computers to catch up. In other words, wtf? lol

This really just seems so silly to me. If they're going to do it this way, I think BIS needs to optimize the engine much, much more. This is ridiculous.

I've noticed it myself. I normally leave my squad in the dust, even toting an AS50 or an LMG.

Yeah I think this this true.

I first noticed it with driving for the first time. When I zoomed out it seemed like it was going faster. I thought it was just an illusion at first, for quite a while actually. Then it got to the point I would always be zoomed out while driving. After that it became obvious that the same thing was happening while I was running. If I zoom out the game looks much better and I move noticeably faster.

I just spawned in debug for the first time ever and logged out/in and spawned on the coast. I ran all the way to the North and had plenty of time to test this with my GPS out. It seems like I hit the next grid about 3-5 seconds faster when zoomed out.. Tell your friends with shitty computers to try it.

Our crew can definitely confirm at least some presence of speed change dependant on performance. We have maaany times been confused by say someone with a pistol sprint running being overtaken with ease by another of us running normally with a sniper in hand or something like that. Have tried many combinations and have never managed to work out a definitive answer. But we almost always have speed differences, and we all have veeeeery different computers. Ranging from i7s with dappa graphics cards down to dual core laptops with no seperate graphics card.
