Why this games "Kill On Sight" attitude isn't a problem.

Recommended Posts

I am new to the forums, but I'm super into the game.

I'll start out by saying that I am not a bandit. I usually get confused on the map, and end up slamming into a place where i get sniped from a tower, and it is annoying.

However, lets remember that this isn't an mmo. The bandits aren't "PKing you".

This is an fps set in apocalyptica.

So people aren't logging into this game looking for you to be their new best friend. I KoS sometimes because I'm not interested in having new friends enough to take the chance. I'm trying to survive. Not meet a new friend on skype.

If they put in some kind of system that makes it obvious that people are bandits, it will defeat the entire purpose of the bandit system and turn this into a really lame 2 faction first person shooter.

In reality, when someone wants to hurt you, they don't wear a uniform anymore. This is 2012. The time when people announced to you that they were after you is over.

I'd like to see Rocket focus harder on adding more sandbox elements like a more realistic housing system or food/drink/temperature systems that actually hurt these players that only run around shooting other players before we get a giant sign on them that says they are bad guys.

Just wanted to give me 2 cents here. Without the "omg i might get shot" feeling in this game, it isn't Day Z. It is fallout new vegas.

There's a flip side to that coin.

If the most powerful players in the game are those that manage to find/bandit sniper rifles, there's going to be little PvP (in the true sense of the word) just a ton of people picking each other of over long ranges.

We talk a lot on these forums about keeping the games within the bound of reality with regards to what players can and can't do and one thing I'm fairly certain of, no one would be a crack shot with different sniper rifles as soon as they pick them up. There's no learning curve built into it.

The lack of learning curve is what is making this game popular.

The scripting of weapons is causing this sniper problem.

I can deal with a lot of bugs and issues. It's a free mod for god's sake. People around here act like this is Guild Wars 2.

Not just that, but without the bandits, this game is really thin on stuff to do.

Once you find matches and a knife, you are fairly set outside of getting sniped.

Completely agree. However, the bandit thing is still great. I completely agree though, my friends follow a rule called "Shoot first, ask questions later." however, one day when we were walking, we met a small group. Of course, we hate bandits and did not shoot on sight. Instead, I scare them, saying "If you move, I will blow your fucking brain." to intimidate them. They removed the entire bandit skin a long time ago, though. So there isn't really a way, except for the heart beat.

I think this game is what Rocket wants it to be. It's his game.

I'm sure he will change it accordingly. But this game isn't being made by Infinity Ward, so its not going to get weekly patches that fix everything.

If this game was what Rocket wants it to be he wouldn't be working on it anymore would he?

Right now it's just FFA DM on entire chernarus with hotspots due to loot. You can make a map like that in editor in less than an hour. It has potential to be so much more, do you really think it's supposed to be so braindead and basic?

Yes, Bandits have to be a part of this game. But to be honest i don't think that getting sniped makes this game more interesting. Its the sense of danger anywhere. But even this sense of danger is getting "worn out" at some point. So playing the bandit game all day is NOT making dayz more interesting. Its the exact opposite.

Bandits are making this game dull and boring because they are the reason that EVERYONE is shooting first. This reduces the gameplay to stealth, shooting zombies & players and looking for loot.

When i begun a few weeks ago there were something on the server that someone might call "Interaction". I met other players, chatted with them and played together - even if i was never sure if he is going to shoot me in the next moment or if he trys to lure me into a trap. Playing with other unknown players was MUCH more interesting than shooting everything that moves.

So Deathmatching may be nice for some time. But a big part of the fun in this game cames from diversity. This diversity is reduced if there is no player interaction anymore.

You seem to vastly underestimate how hard developing a mod is.

Especially for a game as crappy as Arma 2 is to begin with.

This isn't an MMORPG. You aren't supposed to be hunting for loot and flying around on dragons.

It is a survival simulator. in the real world the strong survive. Not the ones who beg for life to be easier.

As opposed to meeting new people, then grouping up to shoot zombies and find loot.

Dude I think people are really expecting too much from this mod.

There is no such thing as a video game that stays fun when you play it for 8 hours a day for a month.

An ARMA 2 mod isn't going to be the first one that does.

Make spawns on the coast. Make people spawn without weapons. Put weapons in towns and better weapons in stary and airfields. Bam you have the current state of the game. Because food/drink and zombies is of little influence.

This isn't an MMORPG. You aren't supposed to be hunting for loot and flying around on dragons.

I'm not supposed to be looking for loot? What? I know the duping makes hunting for loot obsolete but you actually are supposed to be scavenging. And yeah, there is no PvE in this game. Kinda shame because like I said, if I wanted FFA DM on the entire chernarus, that can be made within 1 hour.

It is a survival simulator. in the real world the strong survive. Not the ones who beg for life to be easier.

Oh it's the "real world" argument again. Except in real life people help each other out during crisis and it has always been like that. And there always will be fiends praying on others but it won't be 90% of the populace.

And how is it survival simulator if it's about FFA DM? Are you going to tell me quake was survival simulator too?

A. Yes you just referenced that this is an ARMA 2 mod and not a big budget RPG. Cool. I already said that.

B. This isn't an RPG. IDK why people expect Rocket to put in pve monster hunting. There are other, better games about fighting monsters.

C. Can you give me an actual Zombie Attack as a reference for how people act during zombie outbreaks?

Reducing human relationsto such a simple term is just wrong and shows me that you just want to defend your point and oppinion.

Its not just "teaming up" and kill Zombies together. Its a process that take hours. Hours in which you have to gain someones trust and prove yourself as reliable. Hours in which you play with someone who can turn his oppinion about you in a matter of seconds just to decide that you are not worthy to team up with him. Its not just killing zombies together. It brings all facettes of human interaction into the game. Not just a face- and brainless killing orgie like the usual death match.

However if you were playing this game a few months back then there was a sence of meeting and helping people, and of coarse still shooting people. This was a much richer experiance then the game curently is in its preasnt state.

If there is ever a zombie apocalypse I will murder anyone who hinders my ability to survive and ensure that I continue living.

People who think there is a place in an animalistic world for sentiment and emotional attachment get killed in a crisis with insurmountable odds.

The fact that you need others for social interaction is a weakness in a situation such as this. You will do anything to see them survive, and you become dependent.

This behaviour would only achieve to get yourself killed. No human brings all the skills into the game like the players in DayZ. Do you know how to use a real rifle? Do you know how to build a fishing rod? Do you know how to conserve meat? Do you know how to build a secure home? Are you able to build a house by your own? Do you know how to do all this things in winter? What happens when a snake bites you? What if you break a leg while running away from a bear? Who is carrying you home? Why do you think you are stronger against a group of people if you are alone.

Real life is no death match.

Thinking that you're able to survive a apocalypse on your own might be nice in your misanthropic fantasy world. In reality this wouldn't happen.

But in real life all the bad guys are forced to wear bad guy clothes that way everyone knows who to trust.

Tbh this feeling of always be near to crap in my pants is what i enjoy about this game. It is so risky to lose your hard earned stuff that you think twice before dialing your next move. Im scared about zombies and im more scared about players since their intentions are unknown. Remove this feeling of fear and you get nothing more than another crappy shooter. Its all about survival and mental paranoia. My 2 cents

This.

This game obviously isn't a PVE shooter, or there would be dungeons and I wouldn't be playing it.

This isn't Battlefield 3, or I'd have to wear a uniform and I wouldn't be playing it.

Giving bandits a skin that lets everyone know they are bandits breaks immersion completely. Also, it wouldn't even fix the issue of people who trick you into shooting at them so they get the kill without being a bandit.

People need to stop acting like this is a 150 million dollar shooter and accept that it is an ARMA 2 mod, and then they will be much more impressed with the product that is being presented.

However you seem to miss that there is little incentive to not kill another player, if you already have a group.

I don't ever go onto any other first person shooter and meet random new people and play with them WoW style.

There is no way that they can force people to not want to take each other's stuff.

It's this same carebear crap that ruined MMOs and killed Ultima Online.

I chat with survivors all the time in elektro and cherno. Maybe you should stop shooting first or entering high risk areas without calling out.

Your right, there is no way to force players to not have greed. However there it is possible to make players think about if they really should kill the player. Make players more hesitant to shoot on sight.

Now have your ever heard the term "ESCALATION OF FORCE"? Well I think it can work great in dayz, however almost everything you can do is viewed as a hostile action, even cooking meat. Which is a real god damn shame.
