Chasing a Bus on foot.

Recommended Posts

So my friend died, respawned in electro and decided to meet up with me to reclaim what little I could collect from his dead body at the NWAF. A long, boring run later, I hit Balota Airfield, or atleast I stopped just 800 meters from it. I sit around, watching zombies and fresh spawns tackle each other on the strip and generally listen to the .50cal snipers trying very poorly to claim a kill from them. After a few minutes, the gunfire lets up, and my friend tells me he is nearby with a double barrel shotgun and is coming to me. We'll call him Araon.

So Araon makes his way across a large open field and heads to me, against my wishes (note the snipers I mentioned). But luckily for him, nothing was thrown his way, and he made it to me unharmed. As he dug around in my backpack, looking for his M4A1 CCO, I hear an odd noise. I look up and scan the area, "What the f*** is that?" I ask into my mic, before noticing the answer was less than a second away. On the road was a bus, with a motorcycle escort.

"Holy s***, a bus!" I screamed, bringing my AKM to my face and putting out 30 rounds in semi-auto, hitting the bus more than a few times. My buddy scattered into the tree line, in a mix of confusion and adrenaline. He didn't fire, but instead headed for the road to see if the bus had stopped. It did not. He regrouped, scanned the area quickly, with little regard towards our lives, and when I noticed the noise was heading away I decided to give chase.

First we ran through the trees, looking for any hint that the mobile goldmine might have stopped, but when we were met with little more than zombies I decided to quickly head back up into the trees and head for the next town. The journey was quick, and full of me cursing my inability to hit the bus's wheels. As we hit Kamenka, I noted from the hill that there were zombies moving around. And then I spotted the roof of the bus, roughly 600 meters away. I raised my rifle, reported the position to my comrade, and proceeded to fire off another 26-28 rounds from my AKM. The bus disappeared out of sight, signalling that I once again had missed my prey. But stuborn as I was, I raced down the hill in an attempt to corner those fleeing.

We swept around and checked a nearby road to make sure the bus hadn't fled the coast, and when we spotted zero zombies by a nearby building, I knew they were still nearby. I was a bit angry, as I no longer heard the noise of the bus, and told Araon that any loss of the bus would be his fault. (He never fired on it). At that point we heard gunfire, but was unable to pin down the location. We couldn't tell if the owners of the bus were firing at us, or taking fire from someone else, either way, we'd find out soon enough.

We ran through the woods a short distance and found a small clearing, and stopped to give Araon a blood transfusion. "If they get away, I blame you." I said with a slight frown. Once the transfusion was done, I looked around, trying to see if I could spot the bus in the distance. I could not. I was almost done when I spotted a hint of white along the road, near a pack of trees. I pulled out my binocs and seen a pleasurable sight. The bus roof was shining through the spaces between the trees.

I ordered Araon to get ready as we moved to the trees, and ordered him to both stand his ground and fire on any targets that he seen. Once he seemed to understand that, I gave one last order, "If you need to reload, do it from behind the trees." He had a bad habit of standing in front of his targets, I hoped he'd listen this time. His death at the NWAF had come from sitting in the open, taking another player's M4 to his face.

So we hit the road, spotting the parked bus and the nearby motorcycle. Without even needing to look around, I seen a man by the name of Mark standing near the bus. He hadn't seen us, and this would be his downfall. "Middle of the road, take him out." I fired 3 rounds from my AKM, then scanned the area for other targets as my comrade openned up with his M4A1. No additional targets were spotted, and when I noticed Mark twitching on the ground I pumped 2 more rounds into him, ending his life. I ducked into the tree line, hitting the other side. I expected to see any number of hidden targets, and instead I see Araon run infront of me. I nearly placed half a mag into his butt, when he reported his location. Then I spot something out in the corner of my screen.

"Friendly Medic, does anyone need assistance?"

Are you kidding me?

I turn to see a person with MEDIC clearly visible in the middle of their name, freaking standing in the road looking directly at me. Without a gun, I judged the target to not be a threat, though he could easily be sending information to whomever might still remain. But as I swept my gun around I noticed the nearby zombies were frozen in place. I switched back to the medic and told him, "Combat zone, please leave" and watched him haul tail away, taking no time to look back. My buddy asked why we couldn't shoot him, but I repeated what I had said many, many times before, "No gun, no target." Meaning in my own special way, that a person without a gun is not a threat in the present tense, and wasting ammunition on them could give away your position.

We checked the surrounding area, and found nothing more than the Bus, a Motorcycle, and the body of Mark, as well as a rabbit stuck in a tree, and a zombie stuck in place, crawling near a downed tree (pine, looked like it had been taken out with explosives, or maybe the bus rammed it?). But the things we found on the body were a little disheartening for Araon. We found Mark was carrying nearly no weapons (a PDW with almost no ammunition), but held a coyote backpack filled with medical supplies. As I hadn't seen the medic even get near the corpse, I assumed that this wasn't a clan, or small group of ill-prepared bus owners, but that we had just hit a Medic Escort...

Today we took home a bus, which only had engine damage... Well, until Araon decided to try to blow out the tires and hit the fuel tank, which burned it to a husk. And a motorcycle, which is now abandoned at a poorly hidden camp. We claimed a coyote backpack and a ton of medical supplies. But I have to ask, did I kill a medic's guard, or did I kill some random defender of a bus, and a medic happened by?

Server was US1180. Happened today, in the evening.

Sure, not the best story, but whatever. Outside of stealing vehicles from camps and killing random people in the woods, my days are pretty boring.

People wont read it unless it's twice that long.

Sorry, I don't care if people can't read short stories. Next time, I'll make sure it is in chapters and has a hard cover.

I've seen the ultimate bandit trick with a bus, they got the ENTIRE server is climb into his bus, he sent them around the map and when there were only 1-3 left, he and his buddy killed them and took the loot they raided.
