Equipped weapons not showing up.

So I've only just started playing so if this is my stupid mistake please let me know. I did check the forums and google my issue but no luck.

In a previous life I had a hatchet equipped and was able to use this so my understanding of how to equip a primary weapon is this;

Right click, remove from toolbelt, reload.

In this life that I'm on now I have found a crowbar. When I picked it up, it went directly into my primary weapon slot so my method immediately became unstuck. I figured maybe it just did it itself however no such luck. Hitting R to reload doesn't work, hitting rearm in the Backpack option does nothing. I've restarted the game to no avail and even dropped and picked up the crowbar a few times but it just did the same thing.

Any help would be great thanks.

I vaguely remember reading that crowbars are currently bugged. If I am wrong about this....srry.
