Chemlights... how do they work?

I ask because I just started playing Day Z, and it was pitch black. This guy came up to me, (I freaked out, but he turned out to be cool) asking me if I didn't have my gamma up, then he gave me some tips and a hatchet. Anyway, he threw down a chemlight so I could see during all this, and as he was leaving, I noticed that the chemlight was no longer on the ground, but apparently stuck to me... somehow. I didn't remember picking it up, and for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to put it down. I searched all the key bindings and my entire inventory, but this chemlight wasn't actually "there", it was just floating in front of me. I knew running around a zombie infested wasteland lit up like a christmas tree was a bad idea, so I logged out.

So I have to ask- is this a glitch, or do I just not know how chemlights work? I'm hoping it's not still there the next time I log in, but in case it is, I'd like to know how to get rid of it.

You use scroll wheel to pick up and put down chemlights and flares. I don't know if he handed it too you, since I've only used them solo, but it won't show up in your inventory, just scroll and it should be an option.

Scroll your mouse wheel, there should be drop chemlight option.

Maybe you accidentaly picked it up.

You will also see an option to put it out (I think, at least you can with flares / campfires), sorry, I dont use chemlights.

Arma II has a tutorial. Play it.

Also, Scroll your mouse wheel. It's a key button in this game. There you will find drop chem stick.
