Tents = Not enough space in inventory

Hey guys wondering if anyone can shine a little light on this:

I emptied my secondary inventory and tried to loot a tent the message it game me was "not enough space in inventory or something" I am trying to figure out where it would go and how much space it's suppose to take up? Or does it need to go into a back pack or something initially?

It's odd because it highlight the secondary inventory. But I will give this a try cheers. Maybe tents are a bad idea unless you are in a super super remote area. I just looted some guys tent stole some much needed food and water.
