Go to a major city. It will be tougher to stay alive but you should be able to find something. Watch for server restarts, too.

Go in when the server gets rebooted and go straight to the firehouse. There should be a military grade primary there with ammo.

I suggest you start watching some videos to get a feel about how the buildings look like where you can find a gun in ... Use the Forum & Google to find some DayZ Maps that show you where Guns Spawn ...

It is kinda impossible to NOT find a gun within 30 min. of spawn ..

Depending on where I spawn, use an out of game map. Example

What I like to do is find a deer stand or firehouse, they're the best chance of finding something good fast.
