In-game you change the channels by pressing the "," button, "-" to write, You press Capslock to talk ingame, if that was your question, if you dont know if your mic works, then download skype and try to call someone and ask if they can hear you.

No no I know my microphone works, but if there is no tell tell sign in game that its actually on, then how the heck I know if that other dude can hear me? Also does using the microphone attract zombies? (Because I got a sprinter coming at me from a stand still crouched position for no apparent reason)

Your mic does not attract zeds. Hold down caps lock to talk with your mic.

Hold down "caps lock" to talk and an icon will appear on the screen showing that it is on.
