Day Z - Do not Do list

Tips for surviving in the Chernarus

I'm going to take something for granted here and assume everyone reading that plays Day Z enjoys living long enough to actually accomplish something. Perhaps you want to build a sandbag fort, perhaps it's repairing a car, maybe hunting bandits ( or survivors ).

All of these are great fun and can be very challenging and rewarding, however you need to make it there first. Meet:

The Day Z DO NOT DO list.

This is a list of actions one should try and avoid at all costs - for following these tips alone will keep you alive much longer than the average newbie.

  • Running on the highway
    • Generally you've just spawned fresh on the coast. You'll have little gear, lots of zombies , and pesky bandits that will pick you off like turkeys

    [*]Running across wide open fields

    • Your begging for a bandit to pick you off. Just don't do it

[*]DO NOT fight zombies just because their in your way.

    • Chances are you can sneak around them. There's no point risking blood loss or death for a couple zombies that were climbing trees a mile away from your objective.

[*]DO NOT shoot zombies if it's not 100% necessary

    • Ammo can be a pain in the ass to store and save. Use it sparingly, the worse thing is when another player is shooting at you and you hear click instead of BANG

[*]AVOID The use of flares / chem lights / flashlights.

    • ESPECIALLY AT night. Your basically putting up a sign that says, "I'm Here !"
If you must use these lights, ensure you throw them AWAY from you by holding down the LMB (left mouse button) for a period of time first.
if you are using chemlights, always use red ones, have everyone in your group carry one, so that they will be harder to see from afar but easy to see close up just to know where your buds are, and this will also throw off bandits because there are multiple targets and it is night time so they wont know where exactly to shoot
      - thedeadlysun

[*]DO NOT QUIT THE GAME TO AVOID DEATH / ZOMBIES / OTHER PLAYERS

[*]DO NOT Sprint through towns / villages

    [*]

    • You should avoid sprinting as much as possible, it makes you a MUCH easier target. For everyone.
Instead crouch walk/sprint or crawl. If your careful, you will be able to crawl right by zombies that are but a few feet from you.

[*]DO NOT trust ANYONE by default. This is a game of everyone for them self. They could lead you into a trap just as quickly as they can help you.

I've also taken the liberty of starting a website, dayztutorials.com.

IF anyone has any good guides or tutorials they'd like to submit to it, please pm me and we'll work something out.

Enjoy.

Or throw flares in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of a city, or in an airfield to get others scared, just make sure you throw them somewhere you aren't.

I agree with everything except the "Don't Sprint" rule. Based on my personal experience, you're a much, much easier target if you're being stealthy. I've been sniped numerous times in cities trying to sneak by all the zombies. I've been sniped zero times sprinting from building to building like a madman grabbing everything I need as quickly as possible.

Sneaking to avoid zombies is pointless anyway, as they're very easy to lose once you know what you're doing. Players, on the other hand, will take you out without mercy if they see you being stealthy.

You should add a proper example of things in your list, for example "Do not sprint through towns" could have "Crouch, prone and always use cover in towns" under it.

Great idea, i'll update it here and on my site as well.

I must say sprinting has saved my ass more times than I can count. Its easy enough to lose the face eaters but crawling will get you axed every time.

Lets give out some of my favorites.

Stand as far from towns or any place the face eaters spawn so they wont. If you are 400 ish meters out and see them then the place is occupied by another player. Its a great indicator. Snipers use this as a flag so keep it in mind when you go for a heli wreck, town or deer stand.

When you kill anything,if possible hide the body. Destroy evidence, leave no trail.

If you encounter a base that is loaded and alone, why douche yourself as well? You like the feeling? Grab what end game items you need. Leave the rest so when you are killed you can return and rearm. The hoarders will not likely notice. My team has been doing this to a guy/s and it took him/them forever to notice (it was the truck we took). We still stop in for a snack every now and then.

Hand grenades,OMG the worst idea in game. No they are not intuitive and they are more likely to kill the player throwing them either through direct effect or more likely overshooting the target and alerting said target to the fact you are there. Most smart players will hear it explode on one side and assume it overshot pointing out where you are.

Two points:

As another player mentioned, if you are out in the open, with no cover around, your best defense is sprinting. Shooting another player who is moving a top speed is difficult; I've only managed to do it once with a non-automatic weapon (a Winchester). The player was moving in a straight path because he had not seen me, and I was only about twenty meters from him. So, obviously, dead sprinting parallel to your assailant, or behind better cover, is obviously the preferable option.

Chemlights: these are actually a very effective means of lighting your path without giving yourself away. The hardest chemlights to distinguish (due to the varying ability of the human eye to detect different wavelengths of light, or color) is blue, which is unnoticeable except at very close range - and even then, generally, only as a small blue pinprick. If you're in a low-population server, or in a less trafficked area, a blue chemlight is not the worst idea when you can't see a thing.

EDIT: Another player stated that red chemlights are the hardest to spot - sorry to say, you're very wrong. Red is possibly the easiest color for the human eye to distinguish at a distance; this is why foglights are tinted red.

Yes, yes. I notice that I can barely see the blue chemlights, but the red ones stand out more. If you are close to your allies or alone use blue, if you are a medium distance away use red, and if you like getting shot at use a flare ;)

Nice site too, checked it out and it has a nice layout. You guys should too.
