On again, off again FPS lag, can't figure out why.

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I just started playing today, love the game so far.

The main issue I'm having, beside the learning curve, is massive fps lag. It happens more heavily in cities, but is pretty much always affecting me in some capacity.

I'm running:

6 core 3.6ghz AMD processor

Geforce GTX 460 1gb GDDR5 card

8gb of ram

500gb 7200rpm HD

Windows 7 64 bit. I can run Arma 2 and OA at full everything completely smoothly, and yet Day Z lags like no other, almost to an unplayable degree.

I've searched high and low, changed my nvidia settings, started running dayz off a virtual HD on my ram, and messed with each and every setting. Nothing helps.

Has anybody found a way to fix this, or is it simply a by-product of the stage of development the game is in?

Thanks guys,

-Grayclay

A lot of people have been having this problem, hell I even have it. I'm not sure weather it's Server lag, or DayZ just being like that. But either way, you can D/c and join back and it usually fixes, or just find a new server.

They said it had to do with corrupted object cleanup or something of that nature, this is not entirely your fault and will probably be fixed in the future

A few factors spring to mind.

1: Server up time affects your FPS...don't ask me why...it just does. Or just in general, Servers affect your FPS. Try on servers that have just started up, to see how it runs there.

2: Unless you are using a Phenom:

You don't exactly have a gaming CPU. You are on a architechture that isn't really tested yet, with an overly long pipeline and that is built for number crunching.

Win7 doesn't know how to use proper, it has been hotfixed for improved performance, but that is still not natively supported (it will work better in windows 8)..

Also just to be pedantic, you have a 3xdual core CPU.

3: Maybe you are not playing on the newest beta patch servers, which should have some improvements for city FPS. But yeah Cities kill your FPS.

Not to be a douche, but I'm not sure how accurate any of that information is, at all..

1: Can't be bother to explain that one for you. Dig around yourself. Or go test it.

(not his CPU persay, but the same line)

3: http://da.twitch.tv/fpsguru/b/325515481 somewhere near the end, he mentions that the 1.62.XXXXX beta patches have improvements for cities.

4: Bugger off. I am not writing a essay here, I shouldn't have to source it. Or actually know something about the subject before crying foul.

I was going to make my own thread, but this one was similar enough so I will semi-hijack it.

I was trying to find a balance in performance and graphics, so I put myself in the editor, looking east towards Cherno. I noticed that looking into the city tanked my FPS hardcore.

Running some monitors, I noticed that my GPU usage will drop down to 18-45% when looking towards Cherno, depending on graphics settings, while in open fields, I'll remain at a steady 80% usage with acceptable framerates on any setting.

Here, I'm running at 1280x1024, everything on very high except shadows, post-processing, and AA, which is off. I'm getting ~11FPS, with only 45% GPU usage.

The same picture, but with everything on very low at 800x600. Despite the massive change in graphics, I only get a marginal boost in FPS, since the GPU usage drops down to only 18%.

Yet my card thinks that looking down is the best time to shoot GPU usage to as high as possible.

Anyone know why this is, or if there's anything I can do about it?

Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ @2.3ghz

2GB DDR2800 RAM

Nvidia GeForce GT 440 2GBDDR3

Insofar what has worked best is relogging into a fresh server with low ping, ran perfectly at first, slowly degraded over 15 minutes until it was crap.

Makes sense, but it shouldn't have inasmuch an affect on my gameplay, this rig can run just about all games out right now at max. Unless, that is, DayZ is doing something special with its processing pathways or... whatever.

I would think this has to do with the object cleanup issues they've been having today.

That's not possible. I said that this was in the editor; there were no objects, no AI, nothing. Just an empty map, and me.

Blippy's issues seem to mirror mine. My GPU is at low utilization, my CPU is at low utilization, as is my network, and my HD is an SSD. Something is either overloaded, or there's code that's waiting for something when it doesn't need to be. I lean towards the latter, since there is no evidence of the former.
