Same server, VASTLY different visibility?

I didn't want to go straight to bug reports with this since I don't know my friends' machine stats (they're very similar to mine, however).

We were both playing on OHIO 1 tonight and he kept suggesting we find "some place to stop for the night." I also noticed he was wandering off, and I kept having to backtrack to pick him up again. Finally when I said "I'm behind the red building" and he said "How do you even know what color they are?" I realized he wasn't seeing what I was seeing...

We both had: 12000 blood, 100 temperature, no infections/injuries, etc. Gamma and Brightness settings were the same (default) for both of us.

Server time was ~7PM. I could see the sun clear as anything on the horizon - setting but fully visible and bright as day.

For him, the world was dark. He couldn't see me standing 30m away.

What gives? Anyone else experience it?
