Updating DayZ on a non-steam install?

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased Arma 2 combined ops from Amazon and used the SIX updater to download and install DayZ which worked fine up until today.

The SIX updater updated me to 1.5.8.1 and no further. I tried checking for updates over and over, tried repairing over and over, no luck. It just wouldn't update to 1.5.8.2.

I then tried the manual update using the awful file-index mirrors hosted by DayZ because apparently they are incapable of offering a stand-alone installer or proper update procedure for every release. "Just throw all those headaches on to the end-user, they won't mind!" Needless to say I couldn't figure out which files I needed to download or where they had to go since there's two addon folders in my @DayZ folder that was created by SIX.

I then tried the fan-made freeware DayZ Install Tool. After figuring out on my own that I needed to input my non-steam file path in the first text field I was able to update successfully, or so it appeared. I opened SIX to launch DayZ and was prompted to update that so I did, it now runs in the form of a fancy new launcher. It says I'm still running 1.5.8.1 but it wouldn't even update past that so I chalked it up to a SIX issue. Launched the game, found a 1.5.8.2 server to play on for 7-8 minutes, died, disconnected/reconnected to respawn, capped at 10fps now for some reason.

Figured I could just reboot the game and that might fix it. Relaunched SIX and noticed the big green "play" button is now a big orange "update" button. Clicked it and it "updated" slowly for about 10 minutes. It's now done and what's this I see? Still version 1.5.8.1 and still a big orange "update" button. Guess I can't use this launcher to launch DayZ anymore since my only option is to update which apparently downloads something but makes no difference that I can see.

What a bunch of headaches and wasted time this all was. You can only use the "but it's alpha" excuse so many times, guys.

Game seems to run fine now and a thanks goes out to the creator of that freeware DayZ Install Tool. Also launching from the combined ops shortcut with launch options set so I don't have to run software to run my mod.

SIX launcher/updater still says 1.5.8.1.

I alsways tell people to leave the six updater alone, It brought only trouble for me (although it worked like charm for other mods).

Do everything from scratch according to installation guide, you don't need installation tools as it's very easy.

I'm playing right now. I used the freeware tool to update and then added the launcher options to the Arma 2 Combined Ops shortcut. Everything seems to be working fine now.
