New to the mod, enjoying the crap out of it. One question though. The other day; my first day, I found an axe. I was pretty tired to I decided to find a little hold to hide in and exit the game. But when I logged in I only had my starting items when you re-spawn. Happened again today, I am probably doing something wrong, what is it?

Nothing you did wrong. Log out and try a different server. Should have your axe back

You aren't doing any thing wrong. Only thing I can think of is the servers you are playing on are not saving your stats properly or the hive is messed up.
