Question about Food/Drink depletion

Hi, I'm on my very first survival attempt, and so far I'm doing pretty well.

I have come across no hostile players yet except for one which I took out with my hatchet, and about 12 zombies which I took out with the same weapon.

Got tons of supplies, bandages/pain killers, bullets for guns I dont have yet, a few coke/pepsi's which I've consumed one of, and now finally I got a can of some legendary beans.

My question is, when is the perfect time to consume the beans? Right now the icon for food is a bit reddish, but I don't want to go ahead and consume them now if i still have more time and if I don't find another can anytime soon.

Will the food icon begin to blink or something? or how red should the icon be before I eat the beans?

Any help will be greatful, I'm having a blast playing DayZ, and I came in not expecting much and am totally blown away :)

Usually I wait till the food / drink icons are flashing red before I eat / drink, that way I think it makes them last the maximum amount of time. That is not based on any actual fact or knowledge about the game, just a guess, but that's how I do it :)

The best time to consume food? It depends alot of times you might drop beans or other food items due to the stupid inventory management and then once you look for them oh no! id say eat them as soon as it is redish so you wont die.

Ahh ok thanks, I just wanted some kind of tell so I dont wait too long and just die of hunger with a can of beans in my bag... that would be pretty pathetic lol >.<

It'll begin to blink when you're really low. I usually don't wait that long, as when you double tap W to sprint, the speed of your sprint is determined by hunger and hydration, but if you're moving around relatively slowly and not expending too much energy running flat out you should wait til the icon's blinking :)

I just eat/drink when flashing. However if I'm expecting PvP within the next 5-10 minutes and it's pretty red, then I'll drink/eat just to top myself off before a fight.

hopefully I can stick it out long enough to find some friends to roll with at night time, it really seems like you need 2 or more people to move at night.
