I think one interesting aspect could also be the dog/wolve finding you easier than the zombies, so you would be forced to defend yourself and in this way attract other players / zombies by being forced to shoot. you all know the feeling of hearing gunshots somewhere: might wake your interest or make you head to the opposite direction ^^ in my opinion it could happen a bit more often outside the big towns.

perhaps you could also calm down the dog by throwing them a peace of meat? ^^ though don't know if this is no a thing that only works in movies ... ;)

a tracking dog would make lying around and snipering harder, because you would have to defend yourself and make noise which reveals your position and you're forced to move on. again just some thoughts.
