Best Way to Deal with Someone Random in the Forest?

Recommended Posts

I was running just off the edge of a road, with the road peeking in and out of sight. I noticed a survivor sprinting down the center of the road in the opposite direction. I stopped, looked at him, and quickly got into a crawl, thinking he wouldn't see me.

I held back from firing, and he fired one shot, hit me in the head and killed me before I could type one word.

Anyway, this brings me to my point: what is the best strategy in that situation? Is it better to stay standing up and weave, or maybe hide behind a tree or something? Should I just run next time? It's getting to the point where I'm starting to think I should shoot first and ask questions later, despite trying my best NOT to be a bandit.

I know that feel. I tend to avoid main road as much as possible, but if i find someone, find some hard cover, and say "friendly?"

stay away from people you dont know whenever possible. I reccomend you find a party outside of the game to group up with.

90% of offers to 'group up' in game is a bandit baiting you. The other 10% are cluseless noobs who will set off a hoard or do something else to get you killed.

I just run back for a short distance, crouch behind a tree and peak around it while aiming in his direction. Then try to communicate, no answer will get him shot, otherwise I'll slowly back away and then just run. (Coward, I know :P)

Best way to deal with a random in the person in the forest?

1. Have more people than they do.

2. See them first.

Okay, that's a given, but that doesn't fit under the circumstances I described. You're facing someone, one on one, you aren't sure if they are friendly or not. You aren't sure if they see you or not, but they might. Do you immediately start running and potentially make them notice you, or do you duck or go prone, hoping to get out of sight?

Fair enough.

It's very situational. I usually have at least one person with me when i'm playing, but i have run into a person one-on-one before and i immediately went prone and they actually walked right by me. Granted it was nighttime. But i currently have a character with lots of good stuff and it's very hard to not to justify shooting someone once i know they've seen me. It's pretty much not worth asking questions and getting a response via bullet to the face. The situation that the game puts us in is one that leaves very little room for hesitation, and you, as well as most of us here, have seen the consequence of hesitation.

But yeah, it's a judgement call that's very hard to make. I don't think there is a straight up answer for any situation.

Drop to the deck the second you THINK you see somebody approaching, in a forest or anywhere else. Than, use the roll keys to start rolling left or right to the nearest cover, cover being something that can STOP a bullet, not just hide your pretty survivor face. (In a forest? Thick tree) From there, figure out if you can back up even further to different/more substantial cover.

If its another scared survivor, they'll likely pass on. Wait, and move on your own way.

If its a bandit, prepare for a firefight. Roll, low crawl, low run, and move from cover to concealment and other cover. Try and flank and kill them if possible. If not, use the same techniques to move deeper into the woods to safety.

The lower you are, the less chance of a bullet hitting you, simple.
