How do I make my axe my primary weapon?

All it does is go into my tool bar next to my flashlight, but I have no idea how to make it my primary.

When it's in your toolbet, right click and you'll see the option to make it your primary.

I love you right now. Thanks, I was trapped in a building with zombies outside, but now I can slaughter some zombiehs.

As the other guy said, right click the hatchet. Press "remove from toolbelt". This will move it to your weapons slot. Remember to reload it though. Yes, the hatchet needs to be reloaded when you equip it.
