Kappa's Diary

Recommended Posts

I am going to keep a diary of my time on the game. My first experience is posted here

Day 2:

I am still alive. Safe in my barn, I awaken from the sleep that overcame me. I wait for my friend. He is joining me this evening as we prepare to scour the barren landscape for life, food, drink and safety. In a world where I trust no-one apart from my closest friend, I must simply exist.

Its been a while and he has not returned. My temperature is dropping and my stomach yearns to be treated. The decision is made and I start to move around on my own. Fear in my belly where I wish there was food, I slowly emerge from my protection. The Living Dead are everywhere. Their noise, their stench and their aimless wandering is enough to remind me I am alive. I refuse to become one of them. I refuse to be taken to the other side.

As I scavenge the land with nothing more than my wits I find another barn. Inside I find an Enfield. While the weapon brings comfort, I would trade a thousand guns for one small measure of fluid to pass my drying lips. My body is telling me I need to replenish the energy I am using. No food. no drink, another barn must be left once more. With no map in my Pack I must use the landscape to evaluate my options. A few towns come and go with no reward and I am beginning to tire.

In the distance I see a survivor being hunted by the hoard. I long to help him, but in a selfish decision I remain unseen. I watch as he runs. And then they pounce. They tear him apart all the while I am feeling helpless but relieved its not me. The monsters move on and I take my chance on his pack. The sight of his mangled torso will never be forgotten, but he no longer needs his gear in this world for he has moved on. Nothing. I fear this survivor was new to these lands and his loss was not my gain.

My body reminds me of the need to be fed and watered. Moving up to the top of the nearest hill, I look around for where to move next. As I scan the road I see a town. A Church. Surely there is safety there and with it a moment to reflect. Still my friend is not with me. I am alone and in need of resources.

As I slowly enter the town each building disappoints. Empty cans and tins show traces of life moved on. I have no time to dwell on the desire for company, I just pray they are safe. I turn a corner to move towards the holy building and suddenly my time has come. Face to face with the undead I have no choice but to run. They grow in number as I weave though the town. I chance a look over my shoulder. 3. Its too many. I must reduce the number if I am to survive. Another look. 2. Is now the moment?

I time the turn and flick my finger across the trigger of the Enfield. 1 Zed dropped and 1 more to go. Again I release the bullet and he is gone. But wait. This cannot be. I am bitten and wounded. Trying to control the panic that is rising I reach into my pack and dress my wound. WHAM. Another hit. The shock was enough to light up my deepest primeval reactions. Another shot and he is gone. I have lost blood, but managed to stem the flow of life from my body. I was fast to react, the physical damage was controlled, the mental pain will be with me for ever-more.

I make my way into the church and at last. Provision from on high as I uncover a drink, some beans and a replacement bandage. Again I am smiled upon as a glint in the corner leads me to a handgun, fully loaded. I collapse in the corner and want to wake up from this nightmare. I remember the world we have left behind and long for the 9-5 grind that now seems like paradise.

I look at the time. Its been 3 hours. Still no sign of my buddy so I decide to rest up. As I look out of the window, I see a downed chopper in the field. Zeds are everywhere. I will need to wait for assistance before venturing to the site.

My body replenished but in a wave of emotion the tiredness kicks in. I must sleep. Another night to survive and this is not the end. Indeed, there is no end to this disease that has swallowed our world.
