Crossbow Sound

I've been playing on a server for about an hour and 3 or 4 times I've either died or fallen unconscious for what seems like no reason.

Then some stranger said there was a guy in the area with a crossbow and he was hunting people, so I'm wondering whether you can actually hear a sound when somebody else fires a crossbow.

You hear it if you are 3m away from him ... otherwise it completly silent.

Sounds much louder for the shooter than it actually is.
