Why is it impossible to place tents?

Seriously?

Me and my mate got killed, so I ran back to our corpses took some stuff and a tent. I was going to place it somewhere safe to store all his stuff till he could come back and claim it. I figured i'd be done in 5 minutes. Oh boy how am I wrong. here I stll am 1 hour and 30 minutes later and still didn't succeed at placing my tent. Do you have to be some sort of a math major to be able to place a tent? It keeps saying "the area needs to be flat and no other objects blalbalbla". At first I tried placing it in a forest but in the end my rage made me try and place it in mutiple open flat fields, which stll didn't work. In the end I tried placing it on the road and in the parking lot of a supermarket but apparently even that isn't flat enough.

So how are you supposed to place a tent? What kind of calculations do I have to perform to place a tent?

Yes mad, yes raging.
