How to chat?

Sorry if this is the wrong place for the thread, but I was in need of assistance on how to chat with other people around you.

I found somebody that was friendly, and I gave them a few supplies while thinking I was talking to them because I pressed "/" and the message bar popped up and on the left hand side it said "Group Chat" but apparently they could not hear me because they eventually said "Do you know how to chat?"

If I could get some help I would surly appreciate it. Thanks

Standard binds is the "-" button on your keyboard, not numpad.

You switch chat channels with "," and "."

Use direct chat to chat with people round you.
