Underground Bases? Opens a whole new World of possibilities...

Recommended Posts

Just watched the gamebreaker interview, love the idea of opening up more constructive potential for players and thought of a few things that could work quite well in relation to structures, and a couple of randoms.

So firstly, i'd suggest storage chests (which has probably already been suggested) but with the added mechanic of locks, and lock picking (which could be learnt? Or based upon humanity? Or just damn difficult to master? :P), perhaps with locks in mind, hatches for entrance ways to tunnels/bases. I'm thinking that with things like this, players may well think that what they've built is there's alone and "safe", would also make them more pissed when someone actually manages to get in and grab their gear.

Bed's/blankets/sleeping bags etc. Perhaps something that could be implemented to compliment tunnels and bases, sleeping in order to heal a little blood perhaps, increase body temperature, maybe increase stamina (running speed?) alertness(not being so panicked around zombies).

Easily reachable servers. I'm assuming with my limited knowledge that if building structures were implemented, it would be server specific, so you build something on a server and it stays only on that server, makes sense to me anyways. Now I don't know if there is an easier way to do this that i'm unaware of but I would suggest that picking up the same server each time is perhaps difficult? So i'd suggest some kind of way client side that enables players to save favorite servers in order to more easily access the servers they play most.

So Rocket mentioned possibilities like machinery and electronics, so perhaps there could be more advanced traps to go along with bases. Perhaps more intricate electronic motion sensors with alarm could be found rarely in military areas, i'm thinking they could be used to set up perimeter systems for a base or perhaps just out and about? And then on the low tech side trip wires using string or something, which could GIVE A USE FOR EMPTY CANS as a warning system. Campers I'm sure would love it.

With the addition of the hatchet and wood chopping, perhaps the use of branches for camouflage would be a good partner to this? I dunno, drag branches behind you making a lot of noise or "store it" (which doesn't seem all that realistic really) and then place them wherever you want them to hide hatches or you yourself (snipers). Only problem i've just thought of is that there isn't much in the way of shrubbery in game, so it would look pretty damn obvious if a lump of tree was sticking out the side of a hill.

Shrubbery, a little more variation and coverage would certainly make for easier sneaking and has the added benefit of making my tree dragging idea make more sense...

I reckon i'll stop there, see if anyone has anything to say about these ideas, if they're not all bad, I have plenty more to contribute.

I do actually kind of like most of these suggestions, except for the underground bases. They seem to really take away from the feel of DayZ, and, as you said, would provide a 'safe' place for stuff. It would make Tents obsolete. No thank you.

By the way, if you use the Six Launcher, you can favorite servers. Protip. =P

Oh Six Launcher, I downloaded DayZ direct so I'm using the inbuilt Multiplayer system, perhaps i'll give it a shot then, nice one ;-)

How would this take away from the feel when many people in real life already have underground shelters for times of disaster? I think it's perfect. Entrances should be slightly pronounced, as much as a tent at least, to keep people cautious of where to set up base. It should require two people as well. Tents can be used for the lone wolf.

Entering these based should be tough. I agree with simple traps and such, nothing too high tech. Shipping containers now have purpose- build your base with their material gathered. Just like medal scraps loot.

When radio towers/generators/other items that had been mentioned are implemented, they should be a large part with these hideouts. Generators and gas for then should be the most valued thing to keep your bases going, along with your car.

I don't understand where your character is getting the advanced architectural knowledge to construct such places. Underground shelters in times for disasters take months to build for construction crews. This isn't a walk in the park.

Wouldn't be able to add underground structures with the current Arma II engine...

I remember some time ago someone making a thread exactly like this...

It would have to be something that is done in Arma III...

If Dayz is imported over that is...

I agree totally it should take a long time to dig, and there's supporting posts and stuff? Or we could assume everyone is like Ray Mears and just knows this shit..

Rocket seemed quite confident during the interview that it would be possible? Saying that he messed around with overground structures but "It got too crowded" and that underground was the way to go etc.. etc..

That could of been an implication towards this as a standalone game or when its ported to Arma III, if, also the last I heard there was talk of expanding the map

*Sigh* people get very anal about this on forums don't they? I am though, amazed that there is a thread with the exact same suggestions that i've made, very impressive, there must be doppelganger around here somewhere...

Perhaps as know you of this replica thread you would send me a link to it? I'd love to compare the wording and grammar...

Wow...

Get hostile...

All I did was mention it...

If I wanted to be a dick I would of posted it and then reported the thread...

Settle down man...

If you don't like what someone says...

Ignore them...

Meh, only hostile in game, bit of sarcasm is healthy, if only to emphasis the originality of at least one suggestion i've made. I meant no offense sir, you can always ignore it :D (joke intended)

Lol nice try but you didn't really give it enough attention to achieve ass status mate. Underground as a keyword is great, there is more to this than just the mention of it though.. Are you seriously telling me you don't like the tree dragging idea?

Not really...

But Rocket did confirm Generators...

Big ugly teal things...

And generators means...

Yup...

You guessed it...

Electricity...

I'm psyched to see where he goes with it...

No he also expressed it is NOT being ported to ARMA 3 and that the underground bases MAY be implemented prior to stand alone. He said it is intirely possible in it's current form.

I've noticed people get anal about most change suggestions. No one wants it to be something other then the giant Deathmatch it is now.

I agree with zetal on this one it would definatley take away from the original idea of dayz and im pretty sure it would ruin the game if they implemented the tools to build an intire underground base i mean c-mon think about it =p

Bases being as they are now (practically non existent) fine, but I'm sure the base idea is around to ensure more playability and more crucially, more interaction with the environment. New structures above ground would just become chaotic, the amount of players, the amount of "buildings", they'd be everywhere and quite frankly it would spoil the countryside IMO
