In my experience, the range of the text is a lot shorter than that of the voice.

The range of the voice chat in the direct channel is around 80 meters. The range of the typing in the direct communication channel isn't mentioned but i believe its something around the 20-40 meters just like tchmd187 said.

i've heard 80 meters for voice, 40 for text. haven't tested it for confirmation though. i think it's also directional.
