Help me out! (Noob)

I've played a lot but I always seem to have the same results. I keep finding the same few guns, most likely the most basic ones. Sometimes I can live for long periods of time but I still never find all these high powered rifles I see people running around with so eventually its only a matter of time before someone takes me out. I made it to the NW airfield once and only lived for a minute or two. lol

Do you think I'm wasting too much time at the coastal cities and should just try my luck moving more north again or is it just all luck on what you can find? If so I've just had pretty bad luck I guess! Anyways thanks!
