how do i use a flash light

If you have already removed it from your toolbelt (right click on it 'remove from toolbelt') then it must be day. You can't activate flashlights during the day. To turn it on is 'F'.

They are very buggy. Sometimes you need to switch weapons or put it back in the toolbelt and then back in the secondary slot. Apparently they also do not work during the day, I have never personally tried.

the noob way if you don't know how: press G, find the axe in your inventory, right click remove from toolbelt and it should be equipped like a primary weapon
