Playing Day Z with Arma II:Free

Recommended Posts

So I bought AO without knowing about Day Z in advance. A day later, and now I'm regretting not buying CO. Is there a way to move over files from the Arma II demo into AO to run the mod? I tried this earlier with the addons folders with some success, but it ruined AO's menus and made the UI as if I were playing the A2 demo. I'm sorry if I look like a cheapskate to you, but I'm just trying to figure out a free solution that doesn't maul the UI.

Here's the solution! (I'm not sure whether or not this will work, reply with results.)

1. Load both Arma II: Free (demo) and OA AT LEAST once.

2. Download .rar files from index.

3. while these are downloading, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\@DayZ (You should already have made this)\addons.

4. Under "Launch settings" (Steam Users), enter these: -mod=@DayZ AND -nosplash

5. Download 1.60 Update from http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=15831 (For some reason the Steam version didn't download this and it pairs up the games; Arma II: Free and OA)

6. Extract files

7. Run .exe inside the patch

8. Once done, play!

I heard you can use Arma II Free edition with Operation Arrowhead, I don't know if the demo for Arma II will work for this or not. (Assuming demo is not the free version.)

I think I figured it out actually. I'll reply later with whether or not it worked. And what do you mean assuming the demo is not free? That kind of contradicts the whole "demo" thing.

I assume the demo is not the same as the free version that they advertise with multiplayer.

They set up the downloads so that even if you chose demo from the Arma II page, it'll install Arma II: Free. If I go to Arma II: Free (The standalone title on Steam that is the very same) and try to download THAT, then it won't do anything. No loading, no anything. That must mean that it's the same download.
