Extended First Aid

I guess that is why hospitals use alcohol soaked rags they find on the floor...

Oh no that is right they spend a lot of money to buy bandages specially designed to staunch blood flow. Also if absorption depends on thickness I guess that is why a cloth absorbs more water than a sponge. Oh wait no it doesn't. It is the intrinsic properties of a material, its affinity for water, its ability to expand that determine how much it can absorb. But if you ever get shot, feel free to try and stop the bleeding with a dirty dish cloth, I will be using the specially designed bandages to deal with it.

gauze bandages also allows oxygen access which is required for blood coagulation. and it also has other purposes.

if you want to stop loosing blood material with good absorption capabilities isnt your option - they will just absorb blood out of you.

if i need to stop bleeding in wilderness without bandage i will use usual cloth rags soaked with alcohol, and be just fine. if i have access to trees i will apply leaf(washed in alcohol if possible) directly to the wound to ease process of removal and then tie it with cloth rag.

and if bleeding stopped(couple of hours, to be sure) ill remove it, to speed up coagulation process, of course if there wont be any risk of wound contamination.

Actually, the coagulation process is not affected by oxygen from outside the body. As soon as a bloodvessel is damaged the coagulation process starts. If the coagulation process needed oxygen, internal bleeding wouldn't be able to stop...

my bad, chose wrong words. its not mandatory but speeds up process for sure, at least that i can remember from my experience of wound treating.

It speeds up the healing of the skin, but the coagulation process is not affected whatsoever :)

I love the ideas of all of this, the only problem I see immediately is how long it will take for a wound to heal, I don't think this should be realistic because some wounds might take months to heal in which case you don't have time for. I do like the idea of splints and cloth and stuff though, not so much the cauterizing and bullet removal though :P

Wow, someone who's actually thought about the game and taken the time to explain their idea properly!

Seriously those "suggestions" that are four lines long and basically say "It would be cool if we had x/y/z" without any explanation or thought for how it would affect the game should be locked immediately.

Enough of me bitching.

Yes I like your idea, it makes first aid more realistic and intuitive. I'd also like to see bandages on the player that you would have to remove once the wound healed or replace if the wound takes a long time to heal.

But you shamelessly dug it back up!

Sure did. Call me self-centered but I figured that my suggestions would be better for discussion than all of the threads trying to stop PVP, when Rocket has already said that won't happen.

Yeah, obviously having wounds last for months is not fun. They shoud last for a short while, perhaps a couple of hours, just to add that period of rest after a particulary painful fight. Although I think that the bullet removal could be a decent enough feature, and would do wonders for teamplay, I do agree that the cauterization (And even sterilising tools) is going too far up the realism route.

I had the 'rags' idea cross my mind as well, and i am hoping the 'cooking' system can be expanded to include 'boiling' to turn rags into bandages, needing:

- empty tin can + source of water (can be canteen) => water filled tin can

- water filled tin can + fire => boiling water

- interact with fire to: 1. cook meat, 2. add rags to boiling water

- interact with fire: take bandages

While the fire obviously can't add a sterilized packaging around the boiled rags i think that's just a gaming aspect that shouldn't trouble to many people...

I like the idea of boiling the rags. Although it would work with the current system, it would be nice to have a proper cooking/crafting interface, though that's an entirely different suggestion, of course

@Chickenfeed, i took some of your suggestions, for as far as they were new (those i had already seen suggested are in there aswell though ;) ) and added them to the 'Full Medical' thread, i would like to invite you to that thread if you haven't seen it already, and go through it to see if there are things I missed ...

I took a look at your thread, if you are going to make a compilation thread, it is only decent to give credit where credit is due, IE the people who thought of the ideas you have collated.
