The Unarmed Social Experiment.

Recommended Posts

So after my latest death at the hands of some sniping banditry, I suddenly got to thinking:

In most cases, I see a player with a weapon I always assume he is an enemy. HOWEVER, when I see a player completely unarmed I usually consider them friendly and have no need to kill them.

Now, in that mindset I'm going to attempt a series of runs to major cities and pvp hotspots in an effort to see who is an asshole and who isn't. Without any forms of defense, I wade myself at other players with a friendly tone and the usual "FRIENDLY / I'M UNARMED" lingo.

I'll do alittle update now and then to tell of my stories or just plain deaths.

Wish me luck!

Not everyone shooting you is an asshole :P

I only shoot at armed people cause if I hesitate they gonna kill me...

Kill or be killed...

I only kill on sight in hotspots, such as heli crashes or airfields/military loot

If I see some dude in a town or something, I give him the benefit of the doubt and approach as friendly. If he has high grade weaponry however, I would just ignore them completely

I think I'll do this... and then practice swapping the rifle out of my pack to catch them off guard.

Actually, this seems like it could work to not get shot on sight EVERY time; my prediction is one in three. It would work best away from the coastline, though.

Update 1:

Status: Dead

Location: Elektrozavodsk

Spawning in Otmel, I quickly made my way to the nearest city, Elektrozavodsk. Greeted by zombies, I avert them and head for the closest building to me, a fire station. Upon arrival, I note the dead zombies around the premises and head through the gate. Immediately, I see a player at the opposite end of the building, attempting to loot a dead zombie with a pistol in hand.

"Hey! Friendly here! I'm unarmed!" I yell to him over Direct Comm. He adjusts his view towards me as I walk closer to him. Simultaneously, another player walks out from the fire station carrying a Lee Enfield. They both look at me for a brief moment before returning to the station.

Success!

They do not talk in chat or VON as I make small talk while they sit idle in the station. My job done, I consider leaving before hearing the sounds of a helicopter. One of the friendly players proceeds to run to the tower and shoot at the helicopter, prompting it to switch direction and head south. Jokingly I run in the direction of the heli shouting blindly at it. As I run up the hill I find ANOTHER group of two players. Under the same procedures I tell them I'm a friendly. Both looking at me once again, his partner ignores me as he runs around and down the hill to observe the station.

Succe- Wait what?

As soon as I think I'm in the clear, the second friendly rears his view to me and promptly plugs a bullet in my head, killing me instantly.

~~~
I'm tired for tonight and I have things to do. I'll try again tomorrow and update as follows.
I think running towards everyone you see isn't the right way. Many will see you as a danger if you run straight towards them and will shoot you.
I would recommend playing the normal style and not run in every group of players you see...
I'll try different methods and see what happens. :)
EDIT: I did leave some details out from my story. With the first group, I hid behind a wall and tried talking to him before revealing myself.
I tried this same experiment a few days back. Ran into Elektro with no weapons whatsoever and got shot by the first person who saw me despite the fact they only had a Makarov. Queue 10 seconds of me running wildly around, them missing aplenty, zombies chomping the guys arms then me dieing after I stand still looking directly at him giving the clear shot he obviously needed.
The muppet would rather have killed an unarmed player than pay attention to 3-4 zombies.
Experiment over - a clear success proving exactly what I knew it would.
I can confirm that being unarmed changes the initial game dynamics.
After spawning on the beach last night, I was another guy very close by, I saluted, he came closer, he was also unarmed. We exchanged a few lines and I think we could have ended up exploring together for a while but then a third one came and killed us both with an axe :)
don't remember the name or anything, but I was hearing him shouting over his mic, and he sounded like a really frustrated 12 yo. It was on a german server.
After losing my week old character today me and a friend ran around mostly unarmed or with axes for a bit of fun and EVERY player I saw that was armed when I wasn't killed me on site. On a sprint through cherno this chap sees me and takes a shot, I don't die so I just keep running so he follows me for a good 5 minutes trying to hit me whilst running in the center of a massive horde of zombies. He eventually kills me and is left surrounded by 10 or more Zs. I honestly don't see the point, I was unarmed so there was no gain whatsoever other than him now having to worry about a horde.
I kill on sight mostly, but I seriously don't see the point in shooting unarmed characters.
Even if the game would have been rated M, I am sure that there are a lot of messed up parents who just buy whatever the kids are crying for just to shut them up.
because that unarmed character has an assault rifle in his pack and is going to shoot you the moment you turn your back
Kill or be killed
If you are not on TS with me, you are a target.
Its ok though because people learn when they lose a fully geared character; learn the hard way I guess
I was sprinting through cherno with the starting backpack and no weapon, I couldn't have even HAD a weapon stored in the backpack. It was obvious I had just spawned.
Don't worry, I get it. I nearly solely play this game for PvP, but that just doesn't make sense to me.
Wow. How do 12 yeard old kids even get this game?
Even if the game would have been rated M, I am sure that there are a lot of messed up parents who just buy whatever the kids are crying for just to shut them up.
In some countries there are no age restriction on games so even 12 year old kid can buy M rated game...
