How the bloody hell do I talk?

So, yay, finally got into a server where it's not bloody night, spend about 30 minutes crawling around, found a shotgun, ammo and then as soon as I reached a bigger town, I noticed some tall chimneys and realised that it would be a good spot to scout out the surrounding area.

Well, suffice to say I got up that tower only to get immidiately killed by the other person that had apparently been up there for quite some time. So basicly my first interaction with anything other than avoiding zombies in this game involved me getting murdered, fun times.

Now, I do not know if the "shoot first, don't ask any questions at all later" applies to DayZ, but I was wondering if there actually is any sort of chat in-game so I can actually ask if I can get up a tower without getting murdered for my one soda can.

Also, how do I jump or at least jump over fences?

Caps Lock for voice chat or '/' for text. Just dont use Global channel.

Soem servers allow Side Chat which is server wide. You can change the chat by hitting the "." button but most servers have Side Chat disabled. Direct Communications is really the only way to communicate now and you need to be in the vicinity of the person you're trying to talk to. Using a mic's the best way.

There's also some range limitations. I think its 80m for voice, 40m for direct chat.

It is 40 and 80.

There are lots of reports of people not seeing the direct chat, even when standing next to the player, so I would not rely on that.

Shouting and typing friendly has never saved my life. The only time I haven't been attacked is when the other kid didn't want to attack me to begin with. If anything, typing and talking confirms the other players to your presence whereas they might be willing to forget about you. 8-9/10 times, you will be attacked.
