Throwable Objects - Question

The whiskey bottles and tin cans how do they work? Do you have to throw them onto a hard surface to make noise? Then they attract zombies? If you throw them onto grass they wont make noise I assume?

They worked better in the last update (1.5.6). Bottles use to cause most of the zombies in the area to eventually go investigate the noise when thrown. With the the current 1.5.7 patch they don't seem to be nearly as effective.

Well i threw one on the grass and it made no effect. I even threw it on train tracks with no avail either.
