I've been to like 10 deer posts and haven't found a single thing. I can't imagine I'm looking in the wrong place because there isn't much ground to cover... basically a 4' x 4' wooden square. Am I missing something or incredibly unlucky?

It's a glitch where nothing spawns. Try a different server or wait it out.

Medium unlucky, then again, the possibility of spawning something good is pretty low.

EDIT: I though you meant nothing of value.

If nothing is spawing [unless you are serverhopping], it's a server side issue

Sometimes people will pickup what was in the stand and move it to a pile nearby, if they didn't make that pile far enough away the stand will not spawn new loot... Look around the area, are there dead Zed?

That and sometimes they just don't spawn much.

if you just login to a server near a loot pile spawn, the loot wont spawn until you got about 50 meters away

Sometimes it's because of server "lag". I got a vehicle (uaz) on one German server and it is soo laggy (the server) when i get to some Shop the loot spawns like 2/3min after...
