The Lives of a new Survivor (How I became Jaded)

Recommended Posts

As new player stories help encourage me and my friends to get this game I wanted to share my experience a week after starting:

WARNING

I like writing ;), anyone who looks for TL:DR Tags may as well skip to the end now.

Day 1 (1)

I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I have no idea where I am or how I got here, only that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive.

I feel confident and excited.

The average life expectancy is 34 minutes, but I'm sure my skill will see me well past that meagre statistic.

I check my Gear and see I have nothing but a Flashlight, Bandage, Painkillers and my wits to Shield me.

It's a nice sunny day and I feel good.

There appears to be a derelict Petrol station in the near distance so I head straight for it and I'm not 10 steps off the beach when I hear a blood curdling screech.

Turning quickly I see a Zed jerking in my direction at a rapid pace, Unarmed I flee for the perceived safety of the Petrol station only to notice too late that there are many other Zeds in the forecourt.

I bowl past them and into the station praying for lady luck to grant me a weapon but I find only empty tin cans.

I dart out the back of the Station and head for the Hills and trees to try and loose the Zeds but they don't let up, nipping at my heels for mile after mile.

I'm probably not a half mile from where I woke when one finally makes a snatch for my ankle and I fall twisting it badly and I'm just another Zombie meal, well short of the 34 minute average.

Day 1 (2)

I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I have no idea where I am or how I got here, only that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive.

I feel confident and excited.

The average life expectancy is 34 minutes, but I'm sure my skill and experience will see me well past that meagre statistic.

It's a nice sunny day and I feel good.

I see docklands down the coast and cautiously make may way there, scanning the horizon for Infected.

As I near the perimiter wall I hear the groans and shuffling of Zeds so I crawl in and take a peek.

3 Zeds, 2 walking and one hopping around on all fours, 1 Out building and a large industrial type.

Crawling into the Shed first I find a combat knife and some cans of Coke, warm but I figure I'll drink them anyway.

I pop open a can and all of a Sudden I hear shrieking and two of the Zeds bowl into the Shed after me, I die trying to find out how to use my combat knife, trapped and alone, not even 3 minutes in.

I picture the average survival time clock ticking down a notch just because of me.

I decide to go read a survival guide....

Day 1 (3)

I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I have no idea where I am or how I got here, only that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive.

I feel confident.

The average life expectancy is 34 minutes, but I'm sure my skill, experience and Study will see me well past that meagre statistic.

It's a nice sunny day and I feel alright.

I see docklands to my right and a Lighthouse slightly out to sea on an Island, I head in to the Docks

I raid the buildings for a Fire Axe, some drinks and road flares.

Heading out I manage to agro one of the Zeds so take a running leap of the Docks and swim for the Island intending to raid that.

It's a long cold Swim against the currents with the Zed swimming along behind me until I finally loose him about half way out and make land, but I seem to have lost my backpack and Fireaxe along the way too...

The Island is barren, then as if I wasn't cursed enough, kicking a rock in frustration I somehow manage to trip and fall breaking my leg on a damn stone......I die shortly afterwards on a barren Island but at least it took me more than 30 minutes to starve to death this time... I beat the average...go me!

I go to look up Known bugs and how to avoid them...

Day 1 (4)

I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I know that I am near Balota and that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive.

I feel alright thought a little frustrated.

The average life expectancy is 33 minutes, but I'm sure my skill, experience, Study will see me well past that meagre statistic.

It's a Sunny Afternoon.

I know there is an Airstrip near by and raid it for an M1911a Pistol and several mags, food, drink and bandages.

I then head in to nearby Cherno hoping to raid the Supermarkets and houses for a bigger bag and better weapons.

Dropping a few Zeds on the way I sneak into the Supermarket and find a 16 Slot backpack which I promptly switch out for when another survivor dives in chased by Zeds, he appears unarmed so I drop the Zeds and bandage him up.

He's pretty quiet, probably shock, he just stares at me....

No reply to my questions so I carry on looting, I'm picking up a box of matches when I feel a thud and get dizzy, wet stuff dripping down my neck, I turn around...why's he holding a fire axe...why's it in my head.....

Day 1 (5)

I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I know that I am near Kamarovo and that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive.

I feel Angry.

The average life expectancy is 33 minutes, but I'm sure my skill, experience, Study and new found caution will see me well past that meagre statistic.

The day is starting to get cloudy which means more shadows to duck and dive into.

I head towards Cherno, raiding the Airstrip and millitary out post along the way.

By the time I reach Cherno I have a PDW, M1911a, and various bits of gear.

I raid the firestation then the Supermarket and get an Alice pack (YAY!!) and lots of survival gear.

Hitting the Hospital and see it's not been touched yet, I smash my way in and stock on on enough medical supplies to keep an army healthy and head out.

In a barn outside of town I head in when I see movement, I spin and shoot another Survivor in the arm who then fires a Crossbow at me and misses

I duck out as the Zeds pour in and Crossbow guy fights them off.

Once it's over I apologise and explain I have medical supplies.

He tells me he needs blood badly so I go in and start patching him up, before I've even started the blood transfusion he puts a bolt between my eyes....

Day 1 (6)

I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I Know I am near Komarovo and that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive.

I am FURIOUS.

The average life expectancy is 33 minutes and I suspect this is more due to the Survivors than the Zed

I find a bicycle and fly towards Cherno, looting as I go.

I leave with a Shotgun and Makarov and hit the sheds outside of town.

Nothing here but flies.

I head back into Cherno to tool up properly as I rushed through grabbing only ammo and guns.

Back in the Supermarket I come up behind another survivor with a 16 slot backpack and a automatic rifle, I get the pistol out to pop him in the head as I need that backpack and his supplies as he's clearly cleaned out the place.

He sees me and screams out "NO DON'T SHOOT, NO AMMO, and PLEASE DON'T KILL ME!! FRIENDLY, FRIENDLY”

I curse myself for not just shooting him sooner but now I can't do it.

Turns out he has a friend in the Church down the road with a broken leg and we head out to the hospital and gear up.

We find and medic his friend up and head out of town making easy work of the Zeds and another survivor who tries to ambush us.

I start to feel better, after a bad start I finally have a team and it really does make it easier and more fun.

We hit the dreaded barns again and I tell them it's already been cleared, they say this is as good a place as any.

I was going to ask them a good place for what but don't get the chance; they both open up on me with their rifles.

Day 1 (7)

I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I Know I am near Solnichy and that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive.

I am APOPLECTIC.

I don't give a damn about life expectancy; I just know that anyone who crosses me has very little.

It's getting Dark now which is Ideal, I am less likely to be seen and Survivors or either bunking down for the night or chasing the sun.

Raiding Solnichy I get some survival gear, food and an Axe as well as a M1911A.

Next is Berezino, as I head to the NW Airfield.

Another survivor pelts through town on a Bicycle, could even be mine from Cherno but I stay hidden and let him pass dragging the Infected behind him.

When I reach town I see a Bicycle dumped outside the Supermarket and head in.

I hear rustling as a Survivor snoops about and quickly put two in the back of his head.

His backpack is no bigger than mine and he has nothing of value except the bike which I take.

I cut across country getting hopeless lost in my quest for the NW Airfield and spend hours cycling across openfields.

The peace does something to sooth my soul and I eventually land up StarySoba.

By this time I need food again so I hit the Supermarket again.

Heading into town I hear the Zeds Growling but I just growl back, they don't bother me at all anymore, inconviniences rather than threats.

It's survivors I'm watching out for.

There is a hopper on the stairs in and seems to be stuck on a corpse, I can't be bothered going round so I pop a quick round in and drop him.

Shouting from inside

"WHO'S THERE! FRIENDLY??"

I sigh and wish I had just gone round the back after all.

I call back "Friendly" but get out of sight all the same and drift round.

It's dark and they haven't popped any lights but I can make out two shapes hiding behind the checkout.

They tell me they took fire from a sniper and their friend was taken out, they are waiting for him to get back.

I check my weapons and weigh my options, and axe a pistol and an HE Grenade against two unknowns in cover.

I suppose I've been too quiet so they call out to me again asking if I'm there.

"Sure, I need food and supplies"

"There is loads here, more than we can carry, our friend is dead in the doorway, you can carry his stuff and we'll get meet him!"

Oh yeah sure and I bet his friend will be happy to just carry on without his gear once we rendezvous.

"OK wait there I think I saw your sniper, stay in cover I'm coming in"

I crawl up to their "friend" and see he's already been looted of weapons but has a Alice pack and lots of Medical and food supplies

I can see now that these two have automatic rifles so I keep crawling past the corpse and behind cover.

"Where did you get shot from because I'm sure I saw someone up towards the Church".

As they start talking I arc the HE Grenade in a silent path to land behind the counter, they never knew what hit them.

I leave the super market with an Alice Pack, all the tools I could ever want, food, drink, an AK with 8 Mags, Pistol with 7, Medical supplies and a Bicycle.

I scarf any food I can't carry and I'm feeling pretty healthy as I make my way to the NW Airfield.

Better tooled up than ever before and wondering why I ever through the infected were the problem.

TL:DR

I started this game Bright eyed and bushy tailed expecting a Left For Dead type team experience mixed with a persistant world.

I soon found I wasn’t much more than a Zed myself, killing Survivors for the slightest of reason without remorse, the only difference between me and them I could make excuses for it, I needed their stuff or I felt threatened, me or them…

Funny how things change.

Haha! This is a funny read.

You are a lot more bold than I am. :o) I make slooow progress by being extra cautious and sitting in places for longer periods of time, to scope out the situation, plan movements, and have escape routes in mind. In doing that, you've already experienced twice as much as me in the same amount of time. I am sure you will do just great though!

Thx for posting. :)

Aye I think the problem is the preception a lot of us newbies have coming to the game from "word of mouth" is that this is basically Left for dead on steroids which isn't entirely true.

Love the game though :)

Just having to adjust to the reality vs my expectations =p

Instead of being a goody goody I'm turning into something of a bastard, and loving it =p
