Hello.

my name is Gwilliam and I'm totally new to this game and having a problem learning it. I was wondering if anyone wanted to team up to either learn the game together or teach me if your a veteran (I will take a bullet for you).

Most of the basics u can find on forums and dayz Wiki...read some of those articles. Some advices; when u respawn don’t go running into key/hot spots like the big cities and airfields, first learn how to handle situations with Infected, like try not to fight them in the open, try to kill infected with only one bullet, learn how to be patient and that the infected will chase u as long you shoot like an maniac, try to learn/recognize which building are enterable ....

...go around the map, avoid human players, and try to learn orientating around the map..i know it is a bit frustrating at the beginning, but that’s the DayZ :) that is what is making this mod/game so great .... Just try to survive for as long as u can..

Welcome to DayZ. Any questions or tips, feel free to ask me and I'll attempt to answer them with my limited knowledge of the mod. Take extreme caution with other players, most are following the kill on sight rule.

Tips:

Always expect to be shot

Don't get attached to your items

You will die. Many times.

The Northwest Airfield is dangerous.

Cherno and Elektro are dangerous, but helpful as a fresh spawn when you have nothing to lose.

Be smart.

Hello and welcome!

TheFired3mon has more or less nailed the initial tips, I have a few more;

Trust no one. People shoot on sight, mainly because they fear you'll do the same.

Don't run unless in thick woodlands. Running in the open will; aggro zombies from a far, make you sniper bait.

Crouch walk or prone crawl across roads, stone paths and metal gangways.

Don't fire a gun unless you have plenty of ammo or unless you have absolutely not other choice.

Hatchets are the best start out weapon; they're silent at killing and don't have ammo dependencies.

Woodland areas have Deer towers, these spawn better weapons and equipment but will have an entourage of zombies guarding it.
