Options menu key deleted

My friend accidentally cleared the Pause key bind and now he can't get into the main menu to rebind the key. He is basically locked out of the menu since no default key is bound. He tried rebinding it in ARMA II, but that didn't work. The key binds for DayZ must be stored in a separate config file. Does anyone know how to rebind that key from a configuration file? Why can this type of thing happen in the first place?
