Damage from bear traps?

I'd just positioned my tent well close under a evergreen /conifer tree when crunch. Catastophic damage. Died quickly with -3000 (no time to bandage) from 12000 health/blood.

Do bear traps do this kind of damge? Was led to believe they only maim. Maybe a bug

On a scale of 10 - 10 being the most evil metric shittonne of a way to die, and 1 being your own fault:

1: Being killed by zombies

5: Killed by players.

10: Being stuffed by a tree.

15: Brutally maimed by 1 inch tall threshold in a castle while crawling. Then getting teabagged by 10 zombies. Beat that.
