Thoughts on complaints.

Recommended Posts

So after listening to friends i got to play Day Z and reading a fair bit on the forums of complaints and other mediums such as Youtubers i watch frequently, i figured i may as well discuss my opinions on the matter and also ask what everyone else thought about the complaints and if they were just or not.

First off i'll start with the things every single one of my friends has complained about and that is.

Snipers:

Listing the snipers available first we have.

The BAF AS50.

The Barrett M107.

The CZ550.

The DMR.

The M14.

The M24.

The SVD Camo.

Being a little bit of a firearms enthusist i look up a few sniper rifles and other such things (Never fired one sadly) and lets take in the most sought out and commonly seen (In my experiences) most players use.

The AS50, M107 and DMR.

A lot of my friends complain about the 1 hit kill and long range effectiveness of the snipers when they play, sometimes after i've been freshly picked off i agree but then i think about the realism of the game and remember what i looked up.

The AS50: .50 BMG Anti-Materiel Rifle, in real life the effective range of the AS50 is up to 1,500 meters (1,600 yards).

The Barrett M107: .50 BMG Anti-Materiel Rifle, real life effective range is 1,829 meters (2000 yards).

The DMR: Filling a gap between Infantry and Sniper in military the effective range is in between 550 meters and 1000 meters, so we'll say 800 meters for clarity (I'm not a soldier just what i read when bored).

To address the one shot death the M107 and AS50 deal at long range, look at the longest confirmed sniper kill shots in the world and then being pinged at 800 meters or 1000 meters isn't so unrealistic any more.

Damage wise, the .50 BMG can when used on infantry in it's effective range with a clean hit, basically for lack of better words pop you like a grape, center mass is a kill, headshot is a kill, basically the only surviving is an extremity (Hands, Feet etc) while the DMR is pretty easily able to drop a target in 1-3 clean shots.

So next time you get killed by a sniper, remember in the real world you would have probably just exploded into a bloody cloud or at least part of your body would have. Stay low, stay hidden and remember the vantage points and nests that are used and find blindspots.

My tip is go to the sniper spots and look at what they see, most snipers don't move much, find the blind spots of their nests and then stick to them when you respawn and loot a city. Location Knowledge is the best thing you can have when looting places.

Next on the list my friends complain with is.

Loading/Creating Character/Full all the time Servers.

This issue comes up a lot when my friends try to play with me especially on the ANZ servers, granted it is a pain and a waste of time but you'd probably die in the next hour anyway so why rush.

I just remind them they are playing a mod, in it's alpha that receives no monetary gain from the people playing it (Unless you donate) and then i list off all the things that have bugged out in-game that i'd prefer to be fixed rather than being able to get in faster.

Loot disappearing, Tents bugging, Zombies hitting/running through walls, Hackers and the list goes on, at least i can eventually play Day Z if i be patient enough, but loot disappearing and tents bugging is much more detrimental to my enjoyment.

Watch a movie while playing, read a book, have a smoke (If you smoke) or just look stuff up on the net while waiting, distract yourself and it'll go much faster.

This also answers the last part, if you spend say 20 minutes just getting in to a server, you aren't going to give up your spot, just find another server or wait it out nothing else you can do.

This is just a big Free For All Deathmatch:

This is more common than anything i see and i have a nice answer to it.

It's the medium of the survival horror genre that makes it like this, not the game.

Some examples are.

George Romero's Of The Dead series.

Dead Island.

Dead Rising.

28 Days Later (Not a zombie flick but survival horror)

In each of these, the main character encounters, Zombies, Survivors and you guessed it Bandits.

Day of the Dead: Science and Military working together to find other survivors and a cure to the infection, Military side slowly going insane with the emotional turmoil of losing comrades and being in a losing battle.

Key reason behind the slow insanity: The are not distracted! Scientists are working day in and day out on experiments and tests, while the Military have nothing to do because they are in a fortified location.

Fighting Zombies and Survivors alike.

Dawn of the dead has fortified survivors being raided by bandits for their location which was a prime defended and safe spot.

Dead island and Dead Rising have Psychopaths and Survivors.

Don't blame Day Z for following what the genre is, in the zombie genre survivors are always the biggest threat while zombies are minor until the survivors are to distracted with each other and the horde gets close.

Bandits:

Everyone hates dying, it's a pain, you start over yeah we get it.

But that is what keeps the game interesting, you have so many options when killed.

Do i start over like i did before?

Do i go and hunt that SOB down?

Do i rethink and go else where?

Do i kill someone else to vent my anger?

Bandits keep this game alive and i thank them for it, if i got to sit around with my Heli Crash loot and never lose it, what is the point of playing or getting past the starting guns.

What would the point be of making a base and stocking up unless you eventually had your camp raided and then spent a day hunting the culprit or refilling the stocks and travelling else where.

Kill on Sight Mentality:

Seems now every one is making a thread on "I got killed/back-stabbed/decieved now i KoS" first thing is, get over it, it happens to all of us.

I got shot by someone who said he was friendly, i get attacked by people, i get back-stabbed and i deal with it by starting again and make a note to pop a Makarov into his ass when i see him next.

Friendly players exist! I have had a group of 6 or 8 players leave me alone and offer me to join them, i have a helped a person having trouble equip a hatchet get on his way, giving blood transfusions in the middle of Cherno and also killed people and looted the stuff.

How you play the game is how you earn experiences, you are never going to meet a friendly if you shoot everyone you see, the game is realistic and so are the interactions, i'm sure you've been deceived and back-stabbed before in your life, why should people not take advantage of it in-game.

Personally it's just an aspect of the game to do it, convince someone your a friend and then rob them of their stuff or life, it's a pain in the ass when you fall for it but then you remember next time not to be so quick to lower the cross hairs.

----

That's all for now, i don't care if it's pointless to write this or you disagree, i felt like just stating something id had on my mind for a few days, leave your own opinions/comments/beans or if you have something people complain about to you, let me know and i'll add my opinion to this post.

TL;DR Version: Stop Complaining and just enjoy yourself.

Well if we are sharing a civilized discussion regarding legitimate complaints, I have one that you can add to your list.

After playing for about a month and becoming experienced in the mechanics of the game, i'm finding myself increasingly bored. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game that I enjoy but am considering waiting until more content is released.

All there is left to do at this point is hunt other players because surviving is not difficult/entertaining anymore.

I find making mini-games for myself and other people is a good way to pass the time in game, street racing through Elektro/Cherno, Makarov Gang Wars in a random town.

Not that player hunting isn't fun either, the chase is just as good if not better than the actual fight, sniper nesting and never being seen bores me to hell, fire fights are great like my 2 v 1 (I was the 1) fighting over a Heli Crash site, MP5SD didn't have the range to kill them but was a great moment and i took my death honourably after surviving shock, a broken leg and 2 times bleeding during the fight.

All depends on what your willing to lose and who you play with really, but any game gets boring when you hit the ceiling of it's current release.

Totally agreed. If you risk nothing, you gain nothing, I've found. If you're bored, it's likely because you're playing it's safe and never take any risks in game.

Helping out randoms is interesting too. I've met quite a few decent folk just because I was willing to help them in a jam..also gotten almost killed over it a few times as well.

But the bottom point Momiji made is the kicker: if you're really bored, it's likely stemming from who you're playing with.

People make the difference.

I was playing a a session today with a few people we found some vehicles and i got picked up on an ATV to go pick one up, little did i know i was on returning the old bike a guy rode out to take a car while following the ATV cause i had no idea where the base was (Had no map).

In the span of ride across the map on a damn bike behind an ATV we had plenty of laughs like me almost flipping down a hill, him running into a fountain and getting stuck between debris and reversing out. Then we come to a bridge, the ATV flips and we freak out trying to get it back up.

I ram the wheels with the old bike to flip it and flip it i did, 50m's down the road in a pile of trees and it soon exploded, so now we trek it on foot, me on the bike trying to not run over my partner trying to figure out what the hell happened and laughing all the way.
