Yeah this is an obvious problem with DayZ. Few people did it, and others followed because of the influx of newbies and their "I DO WHAT I WANT XDXD" mentality that just ultimately broke the community apart.

I blame the mainstream media.

In an oddly related note. It seems (from me and my good ol chaps) that places like Cherno and Elektro are actually scarcely hit now a days due to the jokes and high initial death probability inside those cities. It feels weird with 30+ people on the server and going through Cherno seeing no one. (Stores, Hospitals, Apartments, Etc)

Well, to me the problem came with removing the bandit skin. Before that I was the friendliest and most helpfull player you could think of. I only shot bandits. Well, with the easy decision making gone and having died a lot of times to strangers while trying to be helpfull, I became a "shoot on sight person" myself. Easy as that.
