Any tips to help stop getting lost?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm using http://dayzdb.com/map to try find my way around DayZ but continually get lost and end up running in the wrong direction. Any tips to help me not get lost?

Also if you have a map but no compass can you set a way point to follow? If so how?

Thanks.

Hold down left shift and click the map. Some server will have way points enabled, others wont

The sun & moon rise in the east and set in the west.

You can use your watch as a compass: http://www.learn-orienteering.org/old/nocompass1.html

Better yet, find an actual compass.

Use roads, especially intersections, to orient yourself.

Learn how to read topography: http://www.compassdude.com/topographic-maps.shtml

The larger grids on the map are 1000m x 1000m.

The smaller grids are 100m x 100m.

It takes a DayZ player 20 seconds to run 100m. So check your map and if you have to run 5 "boxes" north then that's (500m/100m) x 20s = 100s or 1 minute 40 seconds of running.

-Remember that clouds move from west to east.

-When you log on, see if the text in the lower right can give you any clues.

-Look for the shape and type of buildings or land around you and try to match it up with what you see on the map.

-Look for street signs along the roads. Translating them may be a slight pain in the ass but it can help.

-Especially when spawning along the coast, look for lighthouses. Lighthouses on the map are basically little gray circles. Once you figure out where each lighthouse is and what is oriented around it, it becomes a breeze to move around the coast.

Here's a few landmarks I use to navigate through Chernarus:

  • roads (turns, curves etc.)
  • elevation (slopes, hills, mountains etc.)
  • flora (woods, groves, lone or rows of trees)

I left out the obvious ones like road signs. In general, I can only advise you to learn to properly read a map. That sounds pretty hostile but it's not meant like that.

About clouds... funk me. I read about that when I started playing a few weeks ago but completely forgot about it.
